Very big uniform, or very small soldier.

Not related to this guy but cadet uniform "issue day" was a big deal with parents etc. Size was not a major concern even to these guys. Look at the left sleeve.

If it was too large you had no recourse in this issue uniform but to grow into it.

Great fotos guys!! A true comment if there ever was one Gus. I always feel slightly sad when I see pics of boy/toy soldaten. The worst is that movie clip of Hitler congratulating his boy troops in Berlin and handing our EKs just outside the bunker during the last month of the war. Too many young lives sacrificed for that monster. Anyone see the Stalingrad series that aired last night on the History channel? There was also a terrific BBC production on Auschwitz last week. Out of 8,000 SS that worked at the campduring the war, only 70 were ever prosecuted for war crimes!!

Hello Krag: The Germans captured large numbers of French Chassepot rifles and carbines in 1871. Many of these weapons, particularly the carbines, were modified and utilized by German troops until the mid 1880's. The weapons were then passed to the Landwher & Landsturm. There are many photos of Landwher and/or Landsturm troops armed with these during the first world war period. There is some good information on the German modifications in Die deutschen Militargewere und Machinenpistolen 1871 - 1945 by Hans Dieter Gorz and The German rifle by John Walter.

reservist - I am aware of the converted Chassepots and their use by Germany. I just didn't think they were still around during WW1.

Pretty cool photo though! :-?
