These rare helmets were from the last UK / (Kaiserzeit) Germany contract to be filled. In 1915, Germany was having trouble supplying enough helmets to troops, so they did an 'under the table' bargain with Vickers & Co (real Secret Squirrel stuff!) to manufacture helmets in return for some future deals. (it's a little known fact that the dies for the M-16 style helmet were part of this deal. As a matter of fact, the famous Irish 'Vickers Helmet', or M-27, was a result of these WWI negotiations and Vickers put the same love into the Irish helmet as they did these tschapkas.). However, during the war, the firm was busy making supplies for the British army and put the helmet order from Germany on hold for a while... until 1969 as a matter of fact... The helmets (tschapkas and pickelhaube, both metal and felt) were put up for sale to the public when the new Bundesrepublic Germany wouldn't honor the sixty year old contract.
Another interesting fact is that the metal for some of these helmets was being carried on the Lusitania when it was sunk. How ironic is that!??

Wow Ron......I always knew this type of UK Tschapka had a long History but thank you so much for revealing (making up :) ) its true origins! Once again Sir, you have done noble service, to the haben collecting community by taking time to enlighten us as to this....one of the grossest fakes!!!! :thumb up:
