In the spirit of "it never hurts to ask," I am actively looking for a few specific helmets. Officer-grade preferred, to include OYV/Fahnrich examples (which I'm especially fond of). Quality and condition is very important to me. If you have anything you'd consider parting with - please hit me up! 😺

Infanterie
  • IR94 Saxe-Weimar
  • IR95 Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (or IR135 Saxe-Altenburg)
  • GR89/FR90 Mecklenburg
  • (and IR96/II Reuss, while we're dreaming)
Kavallerie
  • DR17 / DR18 Mecklenburg
  • DR19 Oldenburg

Also: I am perpetually on the lookout for a clean, legit DR2 officer - because I enjoy disappointment and frustration!

Thanks Kris - not wild about the lack of silvering on the emblem, or the double-holes behind the wappen (although that isn't uncommon after wappen regulation changes, IMO). The quality level of the enamel and the detail in the emblem look right to me - just missing the silvered highlights. Not enough images of these floating around to be 100% sure how varied they may have been (if at all). Curious to hear other opinions!

For me personally the problem with this helmet are the double holes. I remember it was on sale 2006 in Paris.

Best wishes,

I got burned with one like that, sold to me by Malcolm Fisher back in the late seventies.
I must have been 17 or 18 years old.

It took me a 3 month's pay, back then. I saddly do not have any detailed pictures anymore of the helmet....

Hi Steve, yes they had square front visors but only following an AE in Dec 1895.

Initially they were rounded visors with the spike of six grooves and finished off with a small ball.

This example has all these traits along with the convex chin scales and cruciform base for the spike.

I attach the info contained in the German cavalry book by Herr and Nguyen as my source.

Cheers Tony 20250614_201312.jpg

I bought this one mistakenly thinking it was the 1868 helmet that replaced the kepi for IR 90 and I and III bttl of IR 89.
The convex chin scales would make it dragoon rather than infantry.
Again source material from the German infantry by Herr and Nguyen.

Thanks for the info
as I said
I had no knowledge of the early Mecklenburg Dragoon helmets
I have both D R 17 & D R 18 in the enlisted and officers helmets
but not the early ones
Many thanks
Steve
