War museum in Vienna

On a professional trip to Vienna, I paid a visit to the excellent war museum.
Impressive is the section on the assassination of Archiduke Franz-Ferdinand in Sarajevo. The car, blood-tainted jacket, handguns used by the killers and many other memories are on display:

I agree it is a great museum. The WWI section was being renovated unfortunately when I was there but I was given a quick private tour under the condition I took no pictures. I did get to walk around the car at least!

Great pics Bruno...the car....the uniform...the pistole such small items that changed the course of humanity. Millions of lives lost as a result of the murder of one man and his wife.

Seems like a great museum and thanks for sharing. Perhaps I can persuade the missus for a short trip to Vienna :)

Regards,

Edwin

It isn't part of the Hoffburg complex. It is in the Arsenal Complex. I actually wrote about it for ArmchairGeneral a couple of years ago:

I also have to add that a great "companion" museum is the Hadtörténeti Múzeum in Budapest, and really if you visit Vienna you should try to get to Budapest as well.

Here is my take on that museum:

I also would add that the Istanbul Military Museum is another good companion to the Vienna War Museum, as you see some of the same items from a different perspective. I have a thing for military museums however (I do plan vacations around museums - I'm not joking).

And the best at the museum shop...

Great pics Bruno! I doubt that you bought one there as your luggage would gain 4 1/2 pounds. :)

I smiled when reading your words, Joe, because this is exactly what happened. I debated for quite a while: should I purchase it or not?... But I was indeed traveling heavy, also because I took my daughter, who was on school vacation, with me on that trip.
I must have it delivered to home ASAP.

Great quality closeups Bruno! Definitely not with a cellphone :bravo:

Thank you Ron. I never make pictures with cell phones. At the museum they allow you to take pictures for a 2-euro added price, but you cannot use a flash. I was concerned that with exposure times in the 1/10-1/30 range most photos would be blurry but to my surprise no, I managed to remain immobile enough...

You have a steady hand indeed! Great photos.

Your daughter will never be able to tell you what you bought her last Christmas. But she will remember the trip forever.

Thanks Peter,

We were only in Vienna for two days and I didn't know about this museum... which is okay! We had such a large list of sites that we may even have looked at this and deiced not to. My priorities were the art and medieval armor collections, my wife wanted to see some gardens and my kids just wanted to have fun, so it worked out okay. I'll have to keep the museum in Budapest in mind too. Excellent information. Thanks.

:D Ron

You are correct Joe, she loved it. I explained how WW1 started, which they have not yet heard of at school and she was very interested. At least she pretended to... But there is much more to see in Vienna, of course, and this trip was a marathon, with 3 museums, the cathedral and the Schonbrunn palace in 2 days. The art history museum is fantastic, and the natural history museum spectacular.
