I hope that comment only applies to pickelhaubes. Even so, I think it's unfair to condemn honest collectors and dealers because of one or two chancers. I seem to remember some German eBay seller, Ulan somebody , whom everybody on here criticised. That didn't mean that all German sellers were the same.

Rant over!

Yes Patrick, this only applies to Pickelhauben. I love the UK and Scotland (I am presently working in Edinburgh) but regarding the collection... I made one great deal in the UK a long time ago, with Malcolm Fisher, a GR109 enlisted lid with original Uberzug. Expensive but genuine. Besides... what I see on ebay coming from the UK is 98% crap. When I say crap it does not mean battered original helmets, I mean plain fakes, forgeries. In the USA, France, Germany, you still occasionally find good original items kept in the attic and waiting for you to be resurrected. No such thing in the UK, in my experience. Perhaps I am just unlucky, or don't have the right contacts; I do not know, but I do not expect much here anymore. I wish you can prove me wrong!

Hi Bruno,

I'm not arguing that there aren't some real rogues in the UK using eBay to try to sell crap, just that it's unjust to tar everybody with the same brush. My main focus nowadays is on British Victorian and Edwardian helmets so I'm afraid I can't help with any contacts for pickelhaubes. However, contacts built up over the years are my main source of good new helmets- the quality of the genuine helmets on the open market through eBay or dealers is either not great, or they are very over-priced in my opinion.

You obviously have good contacts elsewhere in the world judging by the amazing helmets you show on the forum.

Hope you're enjoying our delightful weather. Edinburgh is a cold place at the best of times, so add in a couple of months incessant rain, dark skies, and seven hours of daylight, stir well, and you have the perfect weather to drive everybody into deep winter depression.

Probably the least handicapped friendly city I ever visited in a wheelchair! Cobblestones and my bladder..... Estonia was even better!
