Nothing to salvage here but a great historical relic...

A great relic.

No cleaning, no repair, just look and think about the battle of 'bois des Caures' assault.

:salute:

After asking the seller,

It has been recovered in a barn in a small village near Verdun and never touched since.
The classic story after all, may be true, may be not.
Who knows ?.
A very impressive relic, looks like a definitive "combat helmet".

someone even cut a triangle into the "16 21" banner to fit one of those oddly large doom screws. But this helmet is far gone, all you can do is imagine what happened to it and what stories are behind it.

I don't doubt this helmet could be restored...

Restored to what level really is the question. Some pieces would without a doubt have to be replaced, for example the "1621" banner has been cut. I would imagine that the silver nickel fittings are extremely brittle and would break at the slightest bend. the leather body is in my opinion just rotted to high hell and would crumble if the slightest breeze hit it. A parts helmet MAYBE at best.

Hello,

for example the "1621" banner has been cut

Not a problem, some of these were found on battlefield, with this "V" cut, or with a little hole, for the front screw.

A "V" cut can also be seen on most of 115 rear spines, for the rear screw.

It's not a problem for me too.

I think this was done to acomodate the bandeau to the crossed helmet base on the small size helmet.
