What are my options

I am a new member to the forum and I excited about the depth of knowledge members have. Over 30 years ago I purchased a Prussian Landwher helmet with a shell hat was badly damaged with red rot and literally fell apart. All of this time I have held on to the parts hoping to put them back on a helmet. My question is, what options are out there? Original, reproduction or something else? Can provide pictures if it to helpful.

Thank you for your time.

if you can post pics it would be easyer to judge the condition of the haube and the parts
we have amongst us a specialised haube doctor that can( in the worst case ) declare your helmet dead :D

Welcome to the forum! Yes pics would help but from the sounds of it, the shell is gone, so are we just talking about the metal fittings as being all that is left?

Well, you asked about options so, here are some that come to mind none of which are easy. First, forget about this project and sell off what you have, take the money and put it towards buying a complete similar Prussian helmet. The piece is is not hugely rare so probably within a year you could find one and save yourself a lot of grief. That's what I would do. Why? Because the fittings were made for a specific size 100 yr old helmet, they probably have also been bent out of "true" shape as the helmet shrank and rotted. So, trying to find an original shell that would accept these fittings is almost impossible. A second option....contact one of the German firms that make repro Hauben send them your fittings and have them make up a proper size repro shell etc. I have no idea how much that would cost or if they would even be bothered with the job. In my opinion, there is no win here, the original shell is gone so accept that and move on.

that is indeed bad news
by selling what you have on parts you can put in to buy a propper one that is worth the money
i did have a hinch that this helmet would be a dead one
brian made its verdict
sorry to hear
