I'm looking at this helmet, but have some questions:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-WW1-GERMAN-PRUSSIAN-GUARDS-PICKELHAUBE-HELMET-1916-REGIMENTALLY-MARKED-/272599151632?hash=item3f782cf410:g:gNUAAOSwuLZY0TWI" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I can't tell if the Wappen is just corroded on the reverse or if it's a galvano copy. The detail is lacking, front and back. The photography is poor, but I'm not sure that is the only problem. The helmet and markings seem good.

Here's what I'm seeing. The detail on the star and plate... well, there is none. Also, those strange 'dents' on the back on the breast feathers look very odd to me. I'm sure that's what you're seeing as well, because it looks like some odd corrosion or something that didn't 'cast' right. There's also a spot on the upper part of the wing inside, but who knows what that is. The soldering of the loops also looks very, very bad. Finally, it also looks like they sprayed gold paint on the helmet body to create the 'ghost' of the plate. It just doesn't sit right with me... especially being from England.

I agree. Sometimes the photography is so bad that you can't really tell what's going on, but that Wappen just doesn't look right. The metal fittings all appear to be painted gold in some of the photos, but in a couple of the later photos you can make out that they are actually grey. Also the ad says that they are grey metal. There is too much going on here for me. I'm gonna pass.

Andy Beale is a notorious 'dealer' formerly fronting as UK Militaria in Nottingham, UK. I think the heat got too much for him so he re-branded as Spandau Militaria in about 2013 or so. He has a bad reputation going back years for openly selling fakes and being notoriously uncommunicative/obstructive when it comes to returns/refunds.

I know the stories of UK militaria and I noted that it's gone but I had no idea that the same guy of UK militaria is behind Spandau militaria.

Thanks for the info.

Best regards,

Edwin

Don't mention it. As collectors we have a duty to look out for each other and share the knowledge as far as bad dealers go.

Forewarned is forearmed!
