Whats This?

Not all crosses were what one usually expected. The Prussian cross had the normal motto. However, Bavaria, Hesse, Saxony, the Hansa cities, and Wurttemberg had unique mottos like the examples below. There also were Fürst crosses. These crosses were sewn on to the oilskin cap or attached by two prongs.

I looked at this without my specs on and in a fit of avarice bid on it 'cause I thought for some reason that it was a Vassal states reservist cross - that I could slap on my Baden EM (OK, I know it should be silver but I didn't care in the heat of the moment!). I didn't even read the description - idiot!!
When I later found my glasses I looked at it again and said a certain word preceded by 'Oh!' and wondered what the hell I'd done. I could see the 'Koenig', ooops! and then these holes in it - OK a reserve something maybe.....but the thing that really foxed me about it was the 1914 date? I thought if there was a date it would always be 1813? Is that correct?

So it's back to playing the waiting game......

Good catch Mike! I don't know. My example has 1813. I do not think this is a reproduction, but perhaps some sort of later issue. If you don't want it. I will bid on it. Interesting.

James: Nice Landwehr cross. I believe yours with the loop back retainers is part of the front plate for a Landwehr shako. Here is a complete front plate for comparison.

Nice stuff, guys - but it still doesn't explain the '1914' date on this ebay one. you sure it's not something that relates to a medal ribbon or some kind of award?
 
It looks like little Joey uses a sniperbot, as he is in cold Antarctica, because it was too hot in Texas. I noticed that the weather page on my computer always showed people at the beach or sun bathing when they reported that it was a bit cool in Minnisota.

I did exactly as Gus was saying. I went for this and a picture of an Uberzug that is really unique. I will post it when I get it.

I own this now, but I have no idea why it is dated 1914. Greg, did the iron Cross, change dates? I wonder if there is some correlation to medals? I am sure it is pretty simple, but I just cannot figure it out :-P :-P :-P
