Whats This?

Joe: The Imperial Iron Cross was "re-authorized" in 1870 and 1914. Therefore, Iron crosses will be found with dates of 1813, 1870 and 1914. The original Iron Cross 2nd class is marked only on the reverse (the obverse is blank) and is dated 1813. The 1870 Iron Cross 2nd class is dated 1870 on the obverse and 1813 on the reverse. The 1914 Iron Cross 2nd class is dated 1914 on the obverse and 1813 on the reverse.
Here is a photo of the 3 different crosses.

Nice!

A strange thing: The cover of this weeks crappy TV magazine in the bog has the haubacious Marcia Cross and Jeremy Irons on the front cover. If they got spliced she'd be.......wait for it.......Marcia Irons-Cross!!

Thank you R1! The idea of reauthorization makes some sense but it still does not add up. I would guess there would be a year of 1888 to coincide with the Wehrordnung. I am still stumped!

If they got spliced she'd be.......wait for it.......Marcia Irons-Cross!!

Mike, how long did it take you to come up with that!

Joe: The Iron Cross was originally instituted by King Friedrich Wilhelm III on March 10, 1813.

Stephen Previtera states in The Iron Time, A History of the Irton Cross, "It was intended as a temporary award, designed for bestowal only in time of such great national peril as war, and at the institution or reinstatement of the supreme ruler."

On July 19, 1870, (the same day the French telegram of war reached Berlin) Wilhelm I reinstituted the Iron Cross.

On August 5, 1914, Wilhelm II again reinstituted the Iron Cross.

The year 1888 has nothing to do with the institution or reinstitution of the Iron Cross.

Concerning your Landwehr cross dated 1914 ,which is a very interesting piece, these turn up from time to time and no one seems to have an answer as to what they are.

Weeks and weeks - Joe, this whole post has been leading up to that gag, thats why I started it;-)

I am not questioning this at all. The year 1888 has something to do with the reinstitution of the Landwehr/Landsturm. That was my only thought. I am glad you have seen this before, it must have been some mid or postwar thing. Thanks for chiming in, and for those wonderful pictures!
