White überzug numbers

I have not seen white numbers yet, they are also not mentioned in Joes article. Looks like paint anyway. The writing is very faded, no date readable.

I guess you would encounter bright looking numbers on period pictures more often if it was due to orthochromatic film - green would turn out medium dark I think. Well who knows.
 
It would appear to me that the photo in question has neither red or green numbers, as both colours photograph darker than the Überzeug.

Based on my interpretation of the orthochromatic "spectrum," I would say the numbers were either white or blue. However, given the proclivity of retouching and hand coloring in this era, it is quite possible the numbers were painted or stenciled...on the photograph, that is. It's difficult to judge from the thumbnails.

That might be it. A dark stencil on the negative would bring them out bright. What cought me was mainly the numbers being brighter than the base color of the überzug.
 
Robert you always find interesting pictures! I have not seen one of these before -- I added a new picture with a very makeshift Uberzug number. No color difference though.

My first thought was that number was applied with a magic marker, but after noticing the age of the soldier, I would guess that it was crayon.

The one thing that catches my eye in this pic is the fact that the brass front visor trim on the helmet is obviously split. I guess they did not worry about this sort of thing at the front. Brian

It looks as though the front visor has been smashed, and the tip of the spike is poked through the Überzeug as well

I don't know what color the numbers are, I don't know who these guys are exactly, I have no idea why they have different numbers on their Uberzugs, I do not know what the II is for, the Uberzug numbers and the II do not seem to match.

I may be blinder than normal today, but the only II I see is in the date 10. Feb. 1915

Normally, wartime photos representing several different units that are otherwise unrelated, correspond to the completion of some training course.
