This may be another $800+ mistake for some poorly-informed collector.

The overriding factor is the sheer quality of the fittings.

When new these helmets would have been very expensive to purchase and their quality would set them apart from the OR's/enlisted mens' issue helmets. Not unreasonably private purchasers expected very fine detailing.

This example shows very crude detailing and tooling: look at the details on the wappen-plate, the spike and the cruciform support for the spike and compare them with originals on Tony's excellent reference site.

Also compare the quality of the Cockades and the roundels securing the chinscales through the cockades.

The officers stars retaining the cruciform support are also very crude.

No self-respecting officer would have purcahsed such a piece. This E-bay example is ugly: an original is elegant. Even mid-war examples show greater attention to detail than this modern/cheap copy.

Also the quality of the chinscales: There is a LOT of rough / poorly made and cleaned up metal on those. I'd give a student a D if they turned in metalwork like that.

This thing is very cleverly disguised by the seller, but I for one am going to 'ask the seller a question' and see if he realizes he's selling a fake.

And if anyone has followed the offerings of this particular unknown person from "Wildwood, MO" for the past couple of years, the offerings have been similar.

He's offered nothing but messed-up helmets, all with the wonderful "Sold as is/no returns" warning to anyone bidding on his items. That should be everyone's first clue.

In other words, I haven't seen an "un-messed with" or honest helmet being offered by this seller over the past two years that I've seen him ocassionally put helmets up on eBay to unsuspecting collectors.

Here's his response to my enquiry as to why he doesn't mention that it's a replica:

Dear tanker--1,

I can appreciate your comment however where does it say "original" in the discription? Further more the potential buyer is reminded to Ask Questions before bidding. I have seen copies and new reproductions and as you well know they don't look like this. I'm no expert so that is why I leave it up to the buyer to do his home work so they are satisified with the purchase. Thanks
