Württemburg Dragoon Regiment Königin Olga OR Pickelhaube

This helmet came from a small, old collection from my native state of Oklahoma. It surfaced at an antiques mall.

It’s a Württemburg Dragoon Regiment 25 other ranks helmet. This was one of two dragoon regiments in Württemburg. It was also known as the Queen Olga Regiment. The helmet is a private purchase piece that differs from regular issue pickelhaubes in the lack of normal depot stamps and the atypically styled liner. The helmet came with its original carrying case. The carrying case is marked Schröder & Fränkel, Hoflieferanten, Karlsruhe, currently the second biggest city in Baden-Württemberg, but previously part of the independent state of Baden. Hoflieferanten was an honor bestowed on purveyors to the Prussian monarch and the Viennese court in recognition of a high quality of craftsmanship. The label has the coat of arms of the Austo-Hungarian Hoflieferanten. These merchants were mostly located in Vienna, but were also in non-KuK cities.

Baden dragoon pickelhaubes were configured in the same manner with silver trim, brass chinscales and the unusual treatment of the rear spine attachment bolts (the bottom of which on this example is a replacement). I also replaced the rear mounting bolt and the right side mounting split pin for the visor trim which were missing when I got the helmet. It’s missing most of the washers, which is something you see a lot on helmets from old collections.

A great, rare helmet, Mark!
Note that it may also be a pre-1905 DR26 helmet.
Congratulations, Bruno

Thanks Bruno. How could you detect if it were a pre-1905 piece? I would think being a private purchase thing might complicate dating.

Thanks Joe. I hope to make it and maybe spend a little more time this year. Last year I was only able to be there for the set up. I've had a lot of fun at the SOS.

I don't think there is any way to know if you do not have an actual date. DR25 and DR26 Dragoner wore exactly the same helmet prior to the addition of the central emblem to the latter. You can assume that a private purchase DR26 helmet would have been updated in 1905 though. Therefore it is more likely that yours belonged to DR25.
Good luck for the sale. It is a very nice item.

Thanks. That makes sense. So, this is most likely a DR25, even if made before 1905.
