Here's a visor one doesn't see every day. The cap dates from 1918.
The cap device eagle faces its left per regulations.
The original owner stippled his name in the leather sweatband, "STEWART." The crown is supported by a woven cane stiffener.
This cap belonged to John Cunningham Stewart, who left his studies in Math and Sciences at Yale to become an aviator. Stewart entered training in June 1917 and graduated in October 1918 as Naval Aviator 1601 with the rank of Ensign.
Honorably discharged in 1921, Stewart entered the Naval Reserve in January, 1941 as a Lieutenant, and later served aboard the USSs Sandalwood and San Francisco. Stewart resigned his commission as LCDR USNR in August, 1948.
