Hello Andrew:

The high bidder, ulan9, has a reputation for flogging dodgy helmets assembled from cannibalized parts. This time, however, he has set his sights on a reproduction helmet (I doubt he knows this).

It's nice to see a con man get ripped off.

from now on, im asking you guys EVERYTHING!

like this, for example... is it fake?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=018&item=280032277494&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

looks real to me, but I have a sneaking suspicion against that...

Andrew,
This looks to be a good M1917, lthough it is approching it's top value in my opinion (but then I am a cheapskate)

Hi Mike:

I don't think it would be good to challenge ulan on this one, you might be caught holding the bag.

Hi Andrew:

The M17 Stahlhelm looks good to me, but the chinstrap may be a replacement. The leather looks too substantial.

I still am not sure about this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&item=270035264223&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

I think Ill give it a pass and wait for another... Can you guys give me a heads up if you see a genuine one for a good price?

Hi Andrew,
That one was just a shell, and it had been oiled or lacqured, the high gloss is a sign that the finish has been doctored, While it is not a bad thing to have a dress helmet that has a high gloss, a Stahlhelm would never have been finished with such a shiny surface. The selling price was pretty high when you calculate in the shipping cost. Remember to ask the cost of shipping before bidding on a large item, or you my get an unpleasent surprise. A few more things to watch for on ebay seller's is their feed back, if thye have negative feed back, read it to see if it was justifyed before bidding, watch out for sellers who hide their feed back, as there must be something wrong. Sellers who hide the bidder's ID are suspect, as many who sell bad items do that so the bidder's can not be warned by other ebay members. If you bid on some of the European ebays, be careful of using a decemal instead of a comma if you do not use round number bids, for example a bid of 10.10 euros on a German ebay auction will be 1010 euros as the comma is used in Germany

ok... I think if I can convince ma and pa, I might bid on this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280032277494&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=018

good thing I have been working all summer, although 3 more of these and I'll be flat broke.

Andrew,
I am going to a gun show next week end, I know a fellow that has a few German M16 & M17, they all have reproduction liners and chin straps, but if you are interested, I will get some photos and prices (I think his prices are fairly reasonable)
Gus

Andrew local Gun shows are a good spot for you to look . You pay Canadian Dollars for the items . Canadian Veterans brought back alot of stuff as well . I left a really nice Camo m17 at a show for the same price Canadian as that Stahlhelm.
Mark

thats cool... I havent found one yet... but I did find a WWI (well, just after) German Somme veterans badge... Ill post pics when I get the darn thing. :)
