Zoll Pickelhaube

This last few days, I acquired a copy of the Customs clothing regulations of 1913. The helmet of the Zoll officials is described in some detail. Here is an illustration from the Bekleidungsordnung.

Thanks for posting!
I very much like those helmets! I had two similar helmets in my first collection, back in the seventie's, and no one could tell me (back then!)what they realy were.
cheers

Glenn,

Great job! Maybe your newfound information can lay to rest this difference. I will post two pictures and what I wrote about them at the time. Right wrong???

This is all about Spike bases I think.

Prussian Kommunalpolizei

This is considered a helmet for Prussian Kommunalpolizei model 1896.
The real key is not the very specialized spike but rather the spike base. This one has a cruciform base. The exact same helmet with a round spike base is for Prussian Beamtee. While this one is police often the police helmets are confused with customs.

Prussian Beamte

This is considered a helmet for either military or civil Beamte model 1896.
The real key is not the very specialized spike but rather the spike base. This one is round. The exact same helmet with a cruciform spike base is for the police. While this one is probably customs often the police helmets are confused with customs.

So what do you all think?

Joe,

the regulations above are very clear that a cruciform base for customs officials was forbidden. The Kommunal-Polizei should, however have worn an helmet with a cruciform base. This illustration is taken from the 1897 publication "Uniformen der Deutschen Reichs-Post- und Eisenbahnbeamten , der Kgl. Preuß. Polizei usw."

Right. That's what I was talking about – I think anyway. So we have the same helmet – the same Wappen. different spike base and completely different functions. Lots of confusion cleared up definitively here. Thanks!
