Zündnadel - Pioniergewehr

Not sure if anyone here is interested in Zündnadelgewehre, but I posted this on WAF and thought I would also post it here.

I have quite a few variants of the Zündnadelgewehr, which fit into my Franco-Prussian War collection, and have been fascinated by the improvements and modifications made to those rifles from 1841 to 1873ish. The latest being the "Beck" conversation to the Zündnadelgewehr before the Mauser 1871 was adopted.

I recently added a 1857-dated Pioniergewehr (on the right). The M1854 Jägerbüchse, also known as the M1854 Pikenbüchse because of the integral bayonet, (on the left) was issued to 2 Jäger Bataillone during the 1864 Danish campaign. In the 1866 Austro-Prussian War it was issued to all the Jäger battalions, to include the Garde-Jäger and Garde-Schützen.

In 1865 the new M1865 Jägerbüchse (center) was developed to replace the M1854. My M1865 is marked to the "Garde-Schützen" and dated 1870.

Some M1854s were withdrawn in 1866 and heavily modified to develop a badly needed shorter and lighter Pioniergewehr. It was called the "Zündnadel-Pioniergewehr" (on the right). They were only issued to the Garde-Pionier-Bataillon in 1866. Mine is unit marked to the "Garde Pionier". By 1870 all the pioneer battalions were issued these modified M1854s.

However in 1869 the Prussians developed a new Zündnadelgewehr specifially for pioneers, and it was called the "M1869 Pioniergewehr". The Zündnadel-Pioniergewehrs from the M1854s were renamed the "Pioniergewehr U/M", meaning "Umgeändertes Modell" (modified model).

Also found another (I have many) M1850 Zündnadelgewehr ammo pouch, and it is marked "PB1" for the "East Prussian Pinoneer Battalion No. "1", in Danzig at that time.

Here is one of my favorites. A M1841 picked up off the battlefield at Woerth (that's what the Prussians called it). The French call it the "Battle of Froeschwiller".

I've toured the battlefield twice, the most recent being in March.

Thanks Bob! I have admired your great collection from earlier threads!

Nice swords!

My M1857 is marked to the 1st Dragoon Rgt. This bandolier and pouch are dated 1868 and marked to the 11th Dragoons.
