Horse on eagle

Post by 911car » Sun Jun 10, 2018 1:52 pm

This helmet is marked 92.R 1906 and on the other side R.J.R.78 II B (not easy to photograph but doubtless). The maker is Hermann Clemen. The name inside the visor seems to be "Koch", and most likely "W Koch". Was this helmet engaged in WW1? As we know, all helmets in this regiment received the skull emblem in 1912; however it is said that many service men, principally in the Reserve and Landwehr, were mobilized wearing the horse plate. Perhaps Philippe can tell us...
(Although I used no flash, the center motif appears whiter and brighter on pictures than it actually is).

Beautiful helmet Bruno, congrats! I had one of these years ago but unmarked I was told the wappen was a repro and thus passed it on. Now I am not sure that I did the right thing.

Hi Bruno,
Scarce and beautiful helmet!

You are right, reservists and Wehrmänner from Braunschweig were mobilised in the II/RJR73, II/RJR78, III/LJR74 and II/LJR78. As you wrote, old helmets of the JR92 with the "running horse" were given to them, as the whole active JR92 wore the skull since January 1912.

I really can not tell you if W.KOCH is the right name inside of the visor. Very difficult to tell without having it in the hands. However they were two Wilhelm .KOCH which were at the II/RJR78, both light wounded, one 1915, one 1916:

W.KOCH, 5/RJR78:

W.KOCH, 6/RJR78:

Because KOCH is a very common german name, the wearer could have worn it in peace time in the JR92...

Bruno, I intend to copy your mark for RJR 78. It is not on the list. You said it was difficult to photograph and it must be true as you regularly have crystal clear pictures of Mark's.

Please do, Joe. Yes, this mark is badly faded but doubtless though, when you look at it after lightly humidifying the leather.
