Felt helmet repair

What I find truly remarkable is how well these genuine Filzhelms take back their form after being steamed/soaked. Even this example, which seems to have spent time in a basement or a barn, is already coming back to life. I can't wait to see the final result!

Borax mixed with water in the ratio of 1 liter of water and two teaspoons of borax.Object painted with a brush twice a day for a week.Structure of the material made as in the original, that is, concrete. Now I am waiting for the felt, which will be ground and cover the repair areas.Knopf mounted according to the original holes.

Just incredible 😲 I'm totally blown away

I'm stressed about how I'm going to straighten out a bent neck guard on a super rare out of the woodwork M15 helm coming tomorrow.:unsure:

I really wish I had your confidence and experience in attempting such repairs. I've passed on hundreds of helmets I've thought too far gone that you could repair no problem. I admit to being in awe of your repairs, thanks for sharing (y)(y)

The felt was milled and the first layer was applied. Then, after drying, the material will be chemically stiffened and sanded. I was assisted in the work by Kenny, as four hands were needed to put the insert on the dummy's head.

I sewed the leather according to the original mounting holes. The seam in the original was also sewn by hand, as evidenced by minimal differences in width. I spent exactly 10 hours on this task and I am physically exhausted. Now the skin is forming on the mannequin's head.
