My Latest Find - Bavarian M1845/48 Raupenhelm Shell

I recently stumbled upon this Bavarian M1845/48 Raupenhelm shell while browsing eBay, and after talking to the seller and negotiating a lower price, I pulled the trigger on it! It's in rough shape, but I really enjoy restoring helmets, so I think this will be a fun project that should keep me occupied for another year or so. This helmet appears to have spots for a visor trim on both the front and rear visors, so I assume that this used to be an artillery helmet like the one @J.LeBrasseur posted a while back in the "Raupenhelme" forum: https://www.pickelhaubes.com/xf/threads/bavarian-m1845-48-artillery-raupenhelm.12603/

Sewing happens to be one of my many side hobbies, so I'm planning on sewing my own reproduction raupe using the measurements of an original, and then I'm going to ask my metal-worker friend to see if he can fashion me some brass visor trims. Not sure where to find the rest of the parts, so if anyone has any leads that'd be great!

Awesome! I also noticed that age of kings has a raupenhelm strap for sale.

Since you've worked on both M1845/48 and M1868 raupenhelme, do you know whether there is any significant difference between the chinstraps on each model, or are they identical?

This link you have is for the model from 1845. Both raupenhelm models differ in the way the lions are attached.In the model from 1845, the lions are mounted with a single screw, which is attached to an appropriate oarlock.In the 1868 model, the lion is mounted with wires or screws with nuts.

Got it! The one age of kings is offering has a single screw and a wire soldered above it, so I’m guessing that would make it an M1868 rather than an M1845/48.

This is the model 1845 you are looking for, and the mustache additionally stabilizes the lion.This is a correct clasp from another manufacturer. Do not hesitate to purchase.
