Sudsent, it is true that some JzP units received Dragoner helmets when there was a shortage of metal helmets during the war, but this was an exception, not the rule.
Thank you for the reminder, but I should clarify the intent of my original comment. At the time, I hadn't distinguished between helmets used by officers and those for enlisted soldiers. Upon seeing the helmet for enlisted soldiers and the limited description, I replied without thorough consideration.
 
It's a gorgeous helmet.

To me nothing evokes the elegance of Imperial Germany better than a lobster tailed cavalry helmet.

There was a shortage of helmets, but the US army found an unused stock to bring home…strange.
Perhaps these helmets were finished while the steel helmet made them obsolete.

Its my understanding that even as late as 1917, the Germans had been producing small numbers of and stockpiling spiked helmets for parade use after the war. This could explain those stores of helmets.
