Hi All, Can anyone tell me how many companies there were in a battalion - I always though it was about twelve but have recently heard of there being in some cases as many as twenty companies in a regiment? Any info welcome! Cheers, Simon

    Help with Shoulder board identification

Hi Gents, Apologies again for the delayed response. Many thanks for your help. I'll display the 30 FA board with a rimmed Prussian Crown button for the time being as by 1918 pretty much everyone seemed to be wearing these irrespective of their state of origin. So Chip - am I right in...

    Help with Shoulder board identification

Cheers Joe that was really helpful - I'll definitely be looking into getting hold of that book. It is safe to say I have been well and truly bitten - I remember seeing this display of captured German boards from all the different corps and regiments at the Imperial War Museum in London years...

    Help with Shoulder board identification

Hi Gents, Thanks for the replies - I've been away on holiday so my apologies for the delay in replying. Unfortunately, unlike Chip, I don't have the personal link to any of my boards. I am 99% certain that my great grandfather who fought in Flanders in 1915 bought a Hate Belt home but this...

    Help with Shoulder board identification

What a great collection of straps - the manufacturing/quality variations can be quite striking. Below are some links to some interesting straps. From the top: The first is from the Canadian War Memorial's collection and is an example of a standard artillery strap with grenade which appears to...

    Help with Shoulder board identification

Thanks Chip, interesting stuff. I had a look at your article on the Before 1919 site about boards. So just so I understand this right - turning to Foot Artillery, of the three Garde Foot Artillery regiments '1' featured just the cannons, '2' featured the FAS cypher and the small cannons icon...

    Help with Shoulder board identification

Many thanks Gents. I am at least satisfied that the strap is genuine and is not a repro - I trust you'll agree with me on that! It does appear to have been worn on a tunic as there is a circle around the buttonhole where the red is brighter, highlighting the wear discolouration on the rest of...

    Help with Shoulder board identification

Many thanks Chip - normally I've been able to find answers on the net but this one was a challenge. You must pardon my ignorance - could you explain the concept of the 'Garde' units to me - what made the Garde regiments different to regular field artillery units? I'm guessing this board is...

Hi Gents, Can anyone help me ID this board. http://www.falleneagle.com/shop/viewphoto.php?shoph=5556&phqu=2 As far as I know it's a Field Artillery board and I think it might be the 4th but I'm not really sure. Any help much appreciated. All the best, Simon

    Bayonet Crossguard stamping ???

Hi all, Does anyone have any idea what the stamping 9.478 on a 1917 dated Prussian (W) marked 1884/98 Gew 98K bayonet could mean? Most unit marks I've seen have a combination of letters and numbers in a crossguard stamping. I don't believe it to be a post ww1 turkish reissue stamping as the...

Pickelhaube chinstraps - some sewn, some rivetted?

Ahhh. Many thanks for that. I see. My M1916 has a rivetted strap. I have seen an m1916 with a rivetted strap and brass fittings. That one was picked up on the somme in 1916 and has been in a long standing established private collection so maybe it wasn't just the ersatz pickelhaube straps...

Pickelhaube chinstraps - some sewn, some rivetted?

I was having a look at a friend's erstaz pickelhaube last weekend and was interested to see that the chin strap appears to be rivetted to the two sliding buckles as opposed to being sewn like most i've seen (including my own 1895). I've since has a look on the internet and found a few M1916...

ERN trench knife - should it be blued?

NB. Some of you may have seen this post in Uniforms and Accessories - Haven't quite got the hang of the respective catagories... :-s I bought an ERN Rasiermesserfabrik trench knife a while ago. It's a great piece and goes well with my other German trench knives. I wonder if any of you...

ERN trench knife - should it be blued.

I bought an ERN Rasiermesserfabrik trench knife a while ago. It's a great piece and goes well with my other German trench knives. I wonder if any of you knife/bayonet buffs could answer this one for me. As far as I know the blades of German bayonets in ww1 were not blued and trench knives...

    German bugle 1914 - JR 78

Cheers fellas, Having had a good look at the inscription on the bugle, it is in fact 'METZ - EN - COUTURE', a village in the pas de calais. The village was captured by the 10th and 11th King's Royal Rifle Corps on the 4th and 5th April, 1917, evacuated on the 23rd March, 1918, and retaken by...

    German bugle 1914 - JR 78

Thanks alot Mark. Regarding your information that bugles were used as late as 1916, I did in my searches turn up some info from a military museum website of a British regiment which features a 1915 dated Saxon bugle which was picked up from the battlefield after the repulse of a German attack...

    German bugle 1914 - JR 78

Cheers, things are starting to become a bit clearer - so we've established that its from an IR. I'm afraid my incredible ignorance regarding such aspects is starting to shine through... I wonder if someone could tell me a bit more about the role of a bugler in an infantry regiment. How did...

    German bugle 1914 - JR 78

Thanks Chaps. In Infantry Regiments, Buglers were regular infantrymen who fought like the others but who played their comrades into battle. I know they had the 'swallows wings' insignia on their tunic sleeves. Am I right? Simon
