Atypical Prussian Cavalry Officer's Lionhead Saber

A very nice silver hilt P guard saber. Silver hilt lion head pommel swords like yours were also made for the Saxon Police. These officer swords have the Saxon coat of arms displayed on the P guard. White metal swords like yours really stand out as being different. Congratulations.

    Late Year Midwest Shows

The Leavenworth show always brings out interesting stuff. The area is home to many retired military who have stuff in their closets. I do well at this show held on November 20 & 21 by a local dealer with a Leavenworth shop called Overlooked Militaria.

    East German Shako

A nice Volkspollizei (VP) NCO Tschako. Yours has the proper, and distinctive, leather chinstrap along with the early front plate with the black/red/white center. Later DDR Tschakos have the compass design in the center of the star. One has to be careful of these as they have been reproduced...

    DOA Information question

I recently picked up a DOA private purchase KS98 bayonet and I have a question. Is there a list, or another way, to identify Schutztruppe personnel? The bayonet I have is a Horster made early postwar style long KS98 with the standard In Remembrance of my service time etched on the obverse of a...

    Des Moines IA small show

Unfortunately this show clashed with the long running Wichita, KS Military Collector's Club show. I went last year and did OK but how did you do at this show? I did well buying Imperial German goodies at the Wichita show. I picked up a very nice Bavarian M.89 steel hilt NCO sword with an...

My small German Imperial medal collection

I particularly like the Halbmonds made by BB&Co. One often sees damage to the enamel but yours is very nice. Thanks for showing.

The stress of collecting… it’s real

I just received a US delivered package from Canada that I feared would wind up in customs due to recent tariffs and taxation changes. I pondered buying a Weimar Republic Mountain Troop cap for over a year and finally bit the bullet and made a reasonable offer that was finally accepted, so lots...

    Portepee

Nice Portepee. I agree it is a Beamte in Imperial service with the red/white/black highlights. I like it!

    GMGA and Bergmützen?

An interesting question concerning these caps that I too have been looking at. Can you tell if the visor is leather or cloth or something else? The shape of your pictured cap reminds me of Austro-Hungarian caps but that is just a passing thought. It looks like the cockade worn on the peak...

    German Colonial M1889 Sword?

There is an earlier thread on the Colonial Sword you might want to look over. https://www.pickelhaubes.com/xf/threads/colonial-officer-sword.17644/ BTW, your sword looks perfectly original to me as well.

    Mystery Pickel

This helmet is for an officer in the Grossherzoglich Hessischen Schutzmannschaft. The EL is for Ernst Ludwig. If your friend is interested in selling it I would be interested.

    Berlin Police Shako, circa 1947

You are correct in identifying this wartime Erel Tschako in wear postwar. The West German Police simply utilized the large stock of pre-1945 Tschakos until they ran out of these. Some were painted black instead of green cloth and some were painted white. These are shown in the Radecke books...

    German helmet / butcher bayonets

A nice lot of bayonets. The "Butcher Blade" bayonets are called the S 98/05 in German nomenclature. These Weimar Republic time period bayonets are covered in Chapter 3 of my book, "Seitegewehr: History of the German Bayonet 1919-1945". Yours are all unaltered from the Imperial time period...

    Interesting Bayonet and Frog

Your knife was made in the general style of the KS98 (Seitengewehr) and looks to me like a private purchase rather than an item of issue. The frog is too big for this knife as it would wobble around. The black paint is probably original to the knife and scabbard. I would classify it as a...
