A NOT EASY TO CLASSIFY SPIKE HELMET....

Hello Gents,

Found this last year.

I am still searching for period picts of such a helmet in action to understand what it really is. I have only the pict that Robert posted on this forum a few years ago. Maybe it is a Versuchs-Helm, maybe a helmet worn in hot countries, maybe both...(last solution is my favorite one).
On can indeed see that at one time, the wearer must have got some headaches because of the heat, so a big additional hole was made under the spike and the ventilation trap under it has been removed to allow a permanent ventilation...The cloth over the leather is also extremely faded, probably because of an intensive wear under the sun light :-k

German specialist book writers do not have the same opinion about this helmet.
Jürgen Kraus means that this helmet type was a Versuchs-Helm:

Otherwise, Ulrich Schiers after have seen picts of my helmet, means that this Haube has been very probably worn in southern areas, maybe Gallipoli or Jerusalem:

Fantastic Philippe! That one is so rare :thumb up: Obviously made for the tropics or desert climate, anyway...HOT regions! It is very interesting to see how they tried to increase the flow of fresh air over the head inside the helmet....extra venting even behind the wappen.

That is a truly interesting helmet. I love the little details, like the covers for the Wappen holes or folding rear visor.

Never seen anything like it, I love it.

What a cool design and I am sure a rare find

Congrats!

Excellent! I have seen this before. There is a similar helmet in Rastad (sic). if memory serves me it was a Versuchs-Helm done in conjunction with the 1905 experiments. Do you have a link to Robert's comments?
