Found this last year.
I am still searching for period picts of such a helmet in action to understand what it really is. I have only the pict that Robert posted on this forum a few years ago. Maybe it is a Versuchs-Helm, maybe a helmet worn in hot countries, maybe both...(last solution is my favorite one).
On can indeed see that at one time, the wearer must have got some headaches because of the heat, so a big additional hole was made under the spike and the ventilation trap under it has been removed to allow a permanent ventilation...The cloth over the leather is also extremely faded, probably because of an intensive wear under the sun light :-k
German specialist book writers do not have the same opinion about this helmet.
Jürgen Kraus means that this helmet type was a Versuchs-Helm:
Otherwise, Ulrich Schiers after have seen picts of my helmet, means that this Haube has been very probably worn in southern areas, maybe Gallipoli or Jerusalem:
