Here is a question. The trim that goes entirely around the helmet ear area was not used on the older version Kürassier helmets. What about the step-visor jobs? What's the trim always there? What about the issue ones?

Hi Joe. in In 1867 a small strip of brass or German silver dependant upon the Regiment, was placed along the bottom of the helmet joining the front and rear visors for both ORs and officer's. Prior to that, it was the raw edge on the helmet over the ears. Weitze has had a few early M1842 Kürassier officer's for sale (kept the pics of course!) and you can see that the edge over the ears was not finished on the officer ones like the ORs.

On my M1867 helmet the brass strip (joining the front & rear visors) is missing on the right side.

And the Prussian B & W kokarde misses a few "teeth".

I think the chance to find a little brass strip that fits might be hard.

On request: a private purchase Einj. Freiw. Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha.
This helmet has some special features:
1) Fixation of the chinstrap
2) The leather of the chinstrap is finer and smoother than the standard issue
3) Ventilated spike
What are your opinions?

Thats an absolute corker!!

As you say, the chinstrap attachment is very unusual, I never saw one like that before. Is it correct? I never saw a leather strap on anything other than EM helmets, I think. Why would they do this instead of chinscales? The spike looks like the earlier type also - is this the reason for the anomalies if they are such - that its an early helmet? Whats the rear spine like?

Great looking piece though!!

Well, as you might know, private purchase helmets are mostly of better quality than standard issue. So it's normal that they were made with better (looking) materials and very often made in officers quality. I suppose that Einj. Freiw. sometimes even had more than one helmet, one for every day use and one for "official use".
In this case we see that the chinstrap is attached with the officers rosettes; there has never been anything else there, so originally made like this. You can also see the imprint of the chinstrap in the frontvisor...
The vented spike is of course also original.
The rear spine is unvented.
So in my opinion it's a high grade helmet wich was very expensive to purchase...

I agree with you. I would like to see the backside of the rosettes. This is incredibly interesting, and I do not think I have seen one like this. The ventilating system is perhaps the most unusual. In the private purchase world I think you could buy just about anything. Is the crown pierced?

I don't know if this is true. I don't know the percentage between Diensthelme and higher quality. Darn good question, though. Considering that all helmets had to start with some sort of private purchase...

Yes, I saw the impression of the buckles and I was not implying that the helmet had been altered - I hope you didn't think that I was? Just that as Joe, I'd never seen or imagined one like this. It is very unusual, not to mention beautiful piece. I do recall seeing Officer style helmet's with the Knopf 91 attachment and the rosette that fit's over them which I guess could be worn with a chin-strap in service? As you say, almost anything is possible with privately purchased helmets. The crown looks pierced to me? The liner looks immaculate and that spike is a great shaped one - this guy obviously had taste!

I took some new pictures... and also discovered some text which is unreadable to me... I suppose it's a name?

Chinstrap attachement:

Vented spike (I carefully tried to open it, but it was stuck... so it has to stay closed for now...)

Rear spine

Inside a name? I can't read or understand it...

I am proud to present you my latest purchase... Yesterday I found my last helmet for 2008 :D :
Fähnrich Hessen Leib-Garde-Inf. Regt. Nr 115

Another One! Have you taken the wappen off? I am curious to see how the star is attached. You are going to need more rooms to store this! :-?

Thank you gentlemen!
Sorry to disappoint you Joe, the wappen has never been taken off and therefore I won't do it eighter...
