Hello folks,

I went to the Bavarian Army Museum today. As expected it was amazing. Here's a few photos...

I'd never seen one of these before, Bavarian Alpine Pickelhaube with an Edelweiss on the side.

More to follow...

Cheers
Chris

Thanks for the photo's, would love to handle the last one and see how the Eldweiss is attached to the helmet.

James

Here's a few more...

hartschier.jpg

Bavarian Palace Guard Hartschier helmet, anyone got one of these in their collection?

bav%20ski%20trial%20versions.jpg

The trial version Bavarian Alpine helmets. We've discussed these before. It's only today I noticed the cockades are opposite ways round...

askari%20tarbusch.jpg

An East African Schutztruppe Askari Tarbusch. I'd never seen one of these in the flesh before!

askari%20tarbusch%20markings.jpg

Here's the markings from the inside of the Tarbusch neckshade. What I'd like to know is do they tell us if this Tarbusch was actually issued in East Africa or could it always have been a trial or display model for the museum?

I must say it was a great day out and the oddest thing of all was there was nobody else there. All day I saw two other small groups of visitors. The staff outnumbered the visitors many times over. I guess they get more at weekends maybe.

Cheers
Chris

PS I took millions of photos so if there's anything else you want to see let me know...

So those Alpine trial pickelhaubes do exist in the flesh...
Very nice pics Chris; thank you for posting them!

Glad you liked them, guys. I see your point, James, the Edelweiss could have been added to an existing Leib Regt helmet. Seeing this other view, you may be right-

bavalpine%20haube2.jpg

And Ron, yes they very much do exist, though I think it's only these two and no more probably...

bavalpine%20trial2.jpg

..and just because I knew some of you guys wouldn't be able to sleep at night not knowing if they had markings inside I took this one-

bavalpine%20trialinside.jpg

...as suspected, no markings.

More Alpine caps...

bavalpine%20cap1.jpg

and...

bavalpine%20cap2.jpg

...and the more traditional-

Quite a nice collection they've got-

I'll be dreaming of museum hold-ups tonight that's for sure!!
Those 2 Alpine hats you added look like ancestors of the famous M43 field cap...

Does the museum only feature Bavarian items since it is in Bavaria? I know the museum played a big part in the the Verlag Militaria books for information and uniform examples. I always wanted to make a trip to that museum and ironically my girlfriend lived only a hour away from it in Regensburg but had no idea about it at the time that the museum existed.... :angryfire:

Hi WP,
You missed a good day out there. I guess it's not advertised so well, maybe that explains why there were so few other visitors at the museum today.

Yes, it's mostly Bavarian, but they do have a few other Ausser-Bayern treats-

Prussian Heavy Cavalry... someone remind me which Regiment this one is with the battle honour?

And Ron, I always thought the M43 (and to a lesser extent the Bavarian Alpine caps) were based on the Austro-Hungarian caps of the time-

Yes, just to make you more jealous I went to the Vienna Military Museum the other day too... I'll put another thread up on that soon!

That is a Enlisted Man's Cuirassier Regt No. 2, Pasewalk.

Some of the best museums here in New York City but not the ones I am looking for! Can't wait to see some more pictures.

Thanks for posting!
Chris

Thanks for identifying the Prussian Cavalry Regt, I should have known that...

Glad you're enjoying the pics. It's great to be able to share the fun. Here's some tunic collar and shoulder strap views-

Hi Chris, it seems you had a very exciting day in the museum! Thanks for your pics.
Did you by any chance make pictures of items that once belonged to Prinz Alfons von Bayern?

Adler

Thanks guys, yes it was exciting. Tschapkas and Prinz Alfonz... I'll look them up. I'm just checking out of a hotel now, not sure when I'll be online next but I'll post more then...

Cheers
Chris

Chris, you're killing us with these photos. That Saxon Kurassier looks like it was made yesterday. Made me want to cry.
Were there any weapons as well?

Wow Chris! What a great museum. I'm putting that on my 'to visit' list.

About the Edelweiss, my guess is that it's probably original to the owner who 'customized' his helmet a bit. I had a Harley eagle pin on the side of my tanker helmet. I drilled a hole and put it in place. A visiting colonel got on my case for drilling into the helmet shell, but when he found out it was MY helmet, not issued, then he thought it was pretty cool. Just didn't like seeing issue equipment being 'vandalized'.

:D Ron

I also know where I'll be next year. That is simply an awesome museum. I have only had the furtune of visiting Czech and Italian military museums. Sadowa is a nice little Austro-Prussian War museum if anybody is every in Czech Republic.

Hello folks,

Thanks for all the comments.

Irish T, thanks for the tip on Sadowa. I didn't know there was a Museum there... that'll be on my "to visit" list now..

Ron Poniatowski, yes I think you're right on the Edelweiss. Thanks for the story about your own helmet. I love personal tales like that!

Ron, let's hope that Saxon Kurassier helmet wasn't made yesterday! It seems from some of the Verlag books, that the Ingolstadt and Rastatt collections both have trial uniforms made for inspection and that many of their items were never actually issued. This Saxon Curassier helmet is a bit older again-

...and here's a couple of other 1866/70 helmets-

Tschapkas, Pointystuff? Sorry no. There were probably a couple there but I failed to photograph them. You'll have to wait till I get time to post up my Vienna photos. Will Ulankas do instead?

Adler, sorry I didn't find anything owned by Prinz Alfonz in my photos. But if its any consolation the Seebatallion tunic above was once owned by Kronprinz Rupprecht and the Jaeger Tschako was owned by Ludwig III.

Weapons, did you say Ron? Yeah, I saw a few. Everything from artillery to bayonets, medieval swords to Gatling guns...

gatling.JPG

I didn't know the Bavarian army had Gatling Guns (though I'm expert in that field). Can anyone tell me when these were in use?

g7184.JPG

A nice view of the breech of a G71/84. I never really understood how the magazine under the barrel system worked till I saw this one!

79rev.JPG

Model 1879 Revolver.

All in all a great day out, thoroughly recommended. The Museum's in two halves. Medieval up to 1914, then the First World War in a reduit on the other side of the river. They also have a little shop selling books. See the website at www.bayerisches-armeemuseum.de

Oh and just when I thought I'd seen the best. I found this in a cafe outside-

schweinschnitzel.JPG

Schweinschnitzel and Dunkel Weizen Bier, Himmel in Bayern, could the day get any better? Probably not!

Cheers
Chris

I thought it was a regular omelet at first... :D

Thanks for the update Chris; I particularly liked the Chevauleger mannequin since the Pickelhaube (M1897 or very similar) is about the only thing I have of the entire bunch you posted!

Just one clarification though: Is that dunkelblau Chevauleger mannequin an officer?
