Bavarian Police Pickelhaube

I just received my Bavarian Police Pickelhaube - which I like a lot.

Would appreciate some help with a couple questions and maybe some help in reading the label inside.

First question - what year would this have bee made? I am thinking in the same era as the M1895 helmets?

What is the difference between this cockade (wth crown) and the other ones I have seen on other helmets that do not have a crown, just a silver centre?

And if anyone can help me with the label that would be great.

I think the first line (name) is Manfried Wegenmann and the last line is the head size (kopf-something)

The second line seems to have Kommandant..... (ure?) or maybe that is a rank?

Third and fourth line shave me stumped. Very small writing and hard to get a really good picture.

Picture to follow shortly.

Thanks.

Peter

Second attempt.

Nice helmet, congratulations. That crown on the kokarde makes me wonder if this might be a customs helmet , also, the wappen is military. We shall have to wait though for our resident Bavarian guru James to make a post. Was there a Bavarian State police?

Thanks Brian.

Found this museum, which I’ll visit when I can finally travel to Europe again. Military and
police sections.

I am pretty sure there were Bavarian State Police. Wappen seems to have been there as original.

Hi Peter,

I read:
Michael (Michiel?) Wegenmann
Stations Kommandant
Station: Wörishofen
Brigade: Mindelheim
K*pf***ß: 55 1/2 c/m

Ties in really well with the Bavarian Wappen.

Regards, Lars

Wow Lars that’s great! Thanks.

Now I can try and see if I can find out some more information about him.

Peter

Wow a police station kommandant, that is really cool! It does not get much better than that.

Thanks Amy. My first foray outside of military Pickelhaubes. Really neat that I know who owned it and where they were stationed.

Peter

Very nice Police helmet that is correct, I will try and dig out my Police reference, but I believe the Crown on the kokarden has to do with time frame.

Nice!!

James

Thanks all.

James,

If you find that time frame reference I would be very interested.

Cheers.

Peter et al.,
I hope y'all don't mind if I strap hang off of your tread with a Bavarian Police Pickelhaube that I picked up last fall. You will notice that my helmet is fairly similar to yours, except mine has silver-tone wappen, chinescales, and spine. The spike and crucifix base, the two lion heads, and the cockade are all in brass. Also, the crucifix base has a support plate inside the helmet. I will be interested in seeing what James thinks of these differences and the helmet in general. :-k
Thanks in advance for your observations and comments. :thumb up:

Very nice helmet. I wonder if the cruciform base was a later addition? My spike base is thin brass and almost too flexible. The support would definitely make it stronger. Is the cockade smooth brass? I have seen at least two different versions and now yours is a third.

Hi Peter,
You bring up a good point about adding a base to support the spike being a remedy for a problem that developed over time. Yes, the cockade is smooth brass, and there seems that it may have been silvered at one time because the rim of it seems to have had some at one time.
Best regards,
John

Good morning all
Nice ! :bravo:

This is my test answer on this forum, and I failed to insert any photos to substantiate my claim.
This helmet is not a Police helmet but a Gendarmerie helmet. The plate on the other hand is an M96 infantry plate. The gendarmerie plate is close but the central oval is raised compared to the deivse band.
The tip is the first tip adopted by Bavaria, it is that of the Chevau-Leger M78 helmets.Ditto, the bomb is not of the M1886 model but close to the M1868 model with its perimeter bead.
The helmets of the Bavarian police were noticeably different and especially in silver nickel silver.
The crown cockade is standard on the Raupenhelm officer model, the guilloche cap (squared) confirms the Eigentum finish.
The helmet of JohnS3rd presents a more recent bomb, type Peaked helmet and its face plate conforms to that of the gendarmerie and not Infantry plate.
Unlike the administration, municipal police, customs, or magistrate helmets, Gendarmerie helmets must be considered military.

Hi CLOVIS.I have a question for you.Is this emblem from the photos intended for the Bavarian gendarmerie Pickelhaube? It has a completely different bend of the ribbon with the inscription IN TREUE FEST than my colleagues have shown.

Clovis,

Are you referring to John's helmet? Mine has the name and location of a Police Kommandant inside.

Interesting to learn all these differences. Great helmet John has regardless.

Peter

Good evening Naprawiacz,
Yes that's exactly it. 0vale higher, and central segment of the band higher for the Gendarmerie.
