Bavarian Police Pickelhaube

Good evening Peter,
Yes, yours is also a gendarmerie helmet, I can't read what is written before "Kommandant". ?? I will try to put pictures of Bavarian Police helmets to make a difference. The Gendarmerie had different ranks from the army, and was made up of Brigades and Posts.

Identical to the Gendarme but silver instead of gold. On the other hand, if the gendarme helmet is always the same, because regulatory, there is a certain variety of fittings (tip, visor) for the Police helmet.

The police tunic was navy blue, while that of the Gendarmerie was green.

CLOVIS,

This is what the label says:

Michael Wegenmann
Stations Kommandant
Station: Wörishofen
Brigade: Mindelheim
Kopf***ß: 55 1/2 c/m (Head Size)

So the owner was a Station Kommandant. Did the Gendarmerie have a similar structures to the police? What is the difference between Gendarmerie and Police in Bavaria? I thought in some countries Gendarmeries was almost the same as the police or a different branch of police?

Very interesting discussion.

Thanks.

Peter

This article is about the Prussian Gendarmerie but refers to the Bavarian one. Doing quick internet research I see that normally Gendarmeries are part of the Army working on police duties in many countries.

And just found this excellent article on the Bavarian Gendarmerie:

http://ghdi.ghi-dc.org/sub_document.cfm?document_id=3532

If you click print version on this last link you will get a five page pdf that really does a good job explaining their duties etc. They were even at the top of the budget for allocation of funds. Really really interesting. They all initially came from the Army and had to have served many years to be accepted. This might explain the military wappen on my helmet. I'm kind of glad it's a Gendarmerie helmet now.

Good Evening,
Yes, the Gendarmerie was created by Napoleon 1st and this unit was indeed military. Even today, the French Gendarmes are soldiers, depend on the Minister of Defense, but are available "for employment" by the Minister of the Interior.
The same was true under the Kaiserzeit. In terms of peace, the Landgendarmerie was made up of former non-commissioned officers. During the war, the gendarmes were mobilized in the Feldgendarmerie, and supervised the Hilfsmilitairpolizei because only the career Gendarmes had training and judicial authorizations.

Here is a link on the German Gendarmerie in general.

And yet another very interesting on the Landgendarmerie, in peacetime, knowing that when mobilized these gendarmes will supervise the Hilfsmilitairpolizisten as Feldgendarmerie.

To come back to the "Pickelhaube" we must remember, roughly:
--- Police = Silver nickel silver trim.
--- Gendarmerie = Gilded brass fittings.
