C'est vrai  !

Gents (especially Tony, Brian and Chas!),

This is an highly unusual request.

I have won this auction with what we in the military would term an 'Unauthorised Discharge'; an esnipe bid placed on the item to keep an eye on the price, but which, unexpectedly, won the auction. From where I am right now I have limited internet access and no ebay access, so I cannot even see the photos. So my questions are: what have I bid on? is it authentic? is it worthwhile? is the price right? I would appreciate all the help I can get here. I would also appreciate it if somebody could post a photo.

Mike

A novel approach. The photo is tiny and it is hard to make any opinion on it. Overall, it looks (?) to be OK. Certainly not like many of the bogus ones I have seen. I cannot find your e-mail address, e-mail me Mike and I'll send you the pic. Tony

Hi Mike, I think is a good one, no problem on it, in my opinion.
Otto

PS. See your PM (Private Messages), I have send one to you, the photo is there.

Chaps,

The fliegerhelm arrived today from Switzerland. Thought I'd post some photos as it is a very nice piece. This is the only one I have ever seen. Appears to be 100% original, painted feldgrau over black, nice earflaps and neckflaps, the rimpad has a split about 1 1/2" long over the right ear and you can see the horsehair padding inside. Some minor wear marks, the tip of the male side of the chinstrap is missing, minty interior - basically identical to a EM pickelhaube liner. Size 59 (I assume that aviators had larger heads to accommodate all the extra brain capacity).

Joe,

You should know that aviators get flight pay so they have money to spend during the extra flying leave they get each year. And they get extra flying leave so they have time to spend the extra flight pay. It is all completely logical.

Mike

It might be logical, but I never understood it. I've been in three real helicopter crashes and never got a nickel of flight pay. I had some friends who flew off the same carrier. One was Navy and got a flight bonus. One was a Marine, and he got nothing. There is logic there somewhere. So I decided I was going to marry me an aviator. Instead, I fell for Janet, a personnel officer. The good news is she retires this Thursday! Huge party Friday night -- -- this year we have an all-female Mariachi band.

Hi Janet,
Congratulations!
Welcome to the civilian life.
Now you can better control Joe's expenses with thosePickelhaube things , and you will also be able to be devoted to the reforms and modifications in your house :D .

Joe, Three helicopter crashes! I have 2500 hours of flight time in Black Hawk helicopters in the Australian Army and the US Army and I haven't crashed one yet.

Three crashes!

My brother flew Helo's for the Navy for many years! Maybe we can break him out of retirment to fly us around at the SOS show and go for your crash number 4!

James

I flew twin engine Huey's and the SH-60B Seahawk with just a bit over 1900 hours with out a crash. I won't say that I never felt like I was going too. At night in February in the North Atlantic on a Frigate. The ships flight deck came up and hit the bottom of my helo from 20 feet below. I quit that night once on board. But I flew again the next day. Flight Pay is not the reason I flew again. But boy, those were the days.

I've got less than 1500 hours of time behind the stick and I can not remember how many machines I piled up. but then they say any crash you can walk away from is a good one, although when the pilot is the one who has to pay the repairs, it is not so good.

Flight Pay:

"Military Members who are on flying status receive a monthly "flight pay."

There are two types of "flight pay" for enlisted members and one type of flight pay authorized for commissioned and warrant officers.

The Air Force and Navy pay enlisted members Career Enlisted Flier Incentive Pay, and the Army, Marines, and Coast Guard pay Hazardous Duty Incentive (Enlisted Crew Member) Pay.

Commissioned officers and warrant officers who are on flying status receive monthly flight pay, known as Aviation Career Incentive Pay.

The amount of pay received is based upon years of aviation service, not years of military service.

Special Rules. Some special rules apply for commissioned and warrant officers who had less than six years of aviation service as of October 1, 1991:

These officers must have:

8 years of operational flying duty as of their 12th year of aviation service in order to receive continuous flight pay through 18 years of service.
10 years of operational flying duty as of their 18 year of aviation service in order to receive continuous flight pay through 22 years of service.
12 years of operational flying duty as of their 18th year of aviation service in order to receive continuous flight pay through 25 years of service.

Whine away oh aviator!
