FR 74, 77, 78, ... Officer plate

Hi Eric:

I see the seller has changed the pictures for his eBay listing. Gone is the Train Abteilung helmet (replaced by the pictures you posted). This might have been an honest mistake. I think the Wappen on the newly pictured helmet could be the same as the subject of the individual close-ups for one reason. The head of the small Adler on the royal sceptre has the same odd downward bend.

Now, here's a comparison that may, or may not, help. I photographed a Wappen in my collection, and borrowed the eBay seller's pictures, cropping them accordingly, so we can make a point by point analysis.

I stand by my original impression. Given the proportion and the spacing of the lettering, breast feathers, and other factors, I believe the eBay Wappen is an original Preußen Tschapka Offizier Wappen with an add on Waterloo Bandau for a Pickelhaube conversion.

I would not buy it.

This item has generated 2 pages of discussion on the site. There are many questions regarding the pictures which showed a shot of an OR helmet interior. The pics were changed. Come on...you make this mistake when you are selling an expensive helme on Ebay?? The wappen, spike etc etc. have all been commented on. Cutting this "homme" slack on his fotos is just "collector fever" kicking in. Lets cut to the chase, this piece has tooooooo!!!! many issues to even consider shelling out thousands of dollars for it on Ebay. In order to buy this, you would have to have it in hand, scope it out, smell it, and take it a part. Forget it and move on! Remember, if you bought this, you would have to answer all of these questions when you tried to sell it. Brian

Thank you for all your advice. I think I will listen to cautiousness and wisdom: staying prudent.

One Belgian collector saw these helmets and got a good feeling. However, I prefer pass and wait for another helmet....life is long!

Thanks to Pickelhaubes.com!
