Hello fellow collectors,

I'm making my debut on this fine forum, I was bitten by the collector's roulette bug in my old age....

Is the artifact attached "worth a mass"?

Sorry for poor english.

With collector's greetings.

Welcome to this forum and welcome to the very interesting and enjoyable hobby of imperial German headgear. Others will soon jump in and give you more details, however, It appears that you have been fortunate and for your first helmet have obtained a very nice private purchase helmet. The Landwehr cross added on top of a Prussian line eagle, is one of my favourite Prussian eagle Wappen. A fine looking helmet.

Very nice pickelhaube, only thing that worries me is the soldering marks next to the cross on the right side.Regards
Wojtek

I have to write this: Mr. Tony, the author of Kaisers Bunker, is the culprit of this collector's madness and hunger for expanding information about the military of Kaiser Germany that has possessed me....

I'm just bidding on this Pickelhaube....

Mr. Wojtek, does this soldering disqualify it completely, or will it just be a constant, disturbing discomfort?

Far from an expert here - but shouldn't the eagle have no motto if it bears the reservist cross? And like Wojtek I wonder if the cross has been soldered on (maybe on top of a normal line eagle). I'd want to see the back of the wappen.

The helmet is in nice condition.Everything can be repaired, also it is not a problem. You can always replace the wappen with another one or improve the one that is.Good luck in bidding!

Welcome "E", great to have you join us! Do not worry about your English, our forum is "world wide" with many languages! Your helmet looks excellent, the only thing missing is the officer silk liner but good reproductions or even an original can be found.

Occasionally you do see the landwehr cross being soldered onto the chest of the heraldic Eagle.

No experts here Jeff just we interested collectors. When you see a Prussian private purchase eagle Wappen like this (pierced crown) it typically has no Bandeau, and a Landwehr cross on the chest for Landwehr, or Landwehr cross on the tail with FR on the chest for Reserve.

However, as Amy mentioned, you will encounter these hybrids where (probably) a soldier has moved from a Line Regiment, into the Landwehr or Reserve, and simply attached a Landwehr cross over top. These hybrids are my favourite types of Prussian Eagle Wappen. The solder is a little unusual, as typically they are held on with two split prongs, so perhaps it’s been later repaired, but still a not often encountered pattern.
