Hessen

Thanks gents.

In case you wonder what that Prussian type helmet is doing there , it has a stamp of the 18th BA. and thus used by a Hessian regiment. As we can see in period pictures , they use to mix very often.

Hessian helmet with smooth spike , Prussian helmet, Hessian helmet with round base , belt buckles , all in the mix :giggle:

Excellent pictures Ed!
I only have one Hessen helmet, an M15. Correctly marked, but with the kreuzblatt, and Prussian spike on it.
Just like the soldier on the left of the black & white picture you posted .
Wappen is Hessen, and the patina on the helmet is everywhere the same. I had read before that mixing of parts was quite common on Hessen helmets, especially on the M15's.

Regards, Coert.

An excellent photo Ed, very nice to have original proof that the different styles of metal fittings were actually used on Hessen helmets.

Very nice photo, thank you for sharing these beauties :)

As if care was taken when dressing that at least the man with the Prussian helmet received a „Hessian buckle“ so that he did not get completely lost at a „Hessian native“
An interesting capture!

Thank you for the nice reactions dear friends.

Yes Frank, looks like the budget for defense was not that great in those days , judging by the way they repaired his pants.

Here’s an other picture where it seems like you either had a Hessen Helmet or a Hessen buckle.
