Ikea Cabinets

I love Ikea's Detolf glass cabinets. These are cheap and reasonably good at displaying helmets. I have found there are two downsides to these cabinets. First, these aren't sealed so you do need to dust inside every few weeks to once a month.

Second, for reasons I can't understand these aren't raised off the ground and Ikea really hasn't offered a solution. I solved this problem twice before. The first time I had a custom book cabinet built and the cabinets are perfect above it. Then I added two more cabinets and had a friend help me build another cabinet. The results were good, but it was a day wasted going to Home Depot, cutting wood, gluing/nailing then sanding and painting.

So while I was at Ikea recently I looked around and I found the MOSJÖ TV Stand. This is designed to hold up to a 42-inch TV with weight of 99 pounds. Well, I bought the TV stand and my friend (same friend as before) helped me assemble it. Now the cabinets weight more than the 99 pounds - and I did put helmets in. I thought about putting a center support piece but instead we glued the middle shelf to the top and tacked it with a few nails. This will reinforce the top of the unit.

Instead of an entertainment unit it becomes a nice book cabinet. It took 15 minutes to assemble as opposed to three hours of cutting/sanding/gluing plus painting, etc. I'm rather pleased with the results. The MSRP for the TV stand is also about $40, so it is cheaper than the wood, paint, etc. too. This also matches cabinets better than my two other book shelves!

I will monitor to make sure there is no bowing from the weight of the cabinets but all in all I think it works well. The only downside to using the extra shelf for added strength is that a couple of larger books didn't fit. If I see any problems I can always put a 2x4 in the middle as a beam and that will surely add the extra strength.

I am planning to have two custom made glass displays in my bunker.
One at the wall on the opposite of the door and a smaller central one in the middle of the room.
All other walls will be filled in with existing cabinets.
But we just moved in like 6 months ago and still other priority's of things to do.>So this is how it looks now, with one Ikea cabinet coming from a house clearing.

Great stuff and love the floor. I wish my collection room could be that big, dang kids keep getting in the way

Back in the 1980's when my wife and I were both still working ;
She said to me I don't mind your collection ;
But it needs a room just for it
to be in .
so if you will get a room built , I will pay for half of it .
So I got it started right away before she could change her mind .
Since the room was just for the Imperial German collection
I had 4 custom display cases custom made to go along the walls .
Here are 2 of the cases here .

Wow ! One fine collection and great display !

Gentlemen; BTW: how can I make my cabinet "dustproof". Is there some kind of tape ???

Thank you,
Francis

Collector friends ;
Thanks for the nice comments .
I have 2 more cabinets with mostly
mounted units
I will try and get them posted later
I am glad that I got it done back then ,
because I sure could not get it done now.
Thanks
Steve

Case 3
Mostly Dragoons and Kurassiere
My small toy soldier collection .
Soldiers were all I ever wanted as a child .
I guess that started my interest in Military collecting
When I was 12 years old I saw the toy soldier version of the 1953 English Coronation
procession . I was not able to afford it then .
Later I put it together .
Case 4 Husaren and Uhlans
also some cloth hats and steel helmets .
The German Army WW II steel helmets were the start of my
military collecting . A lot different these days .
In the early years they were $ 25.00 each .
Paratrooper helmets $ 50.00
also in the case a little overflow of the Infantry collection
which my collection of is much stronger than the cavalry .
I might add that in 1992 I sold all non -Prussian
helmets from my collection .
Prussian only in the collection now .

James ;
I am no expert on that .
Some years ago I saw a few of them at a show .

I was told they were maneuver bands .
That made sense to me .
They are red on 1 side and yellow on the other
so I guess 1 team would be red the other team yellow .
They just slip over the helmet
and cloth pieces with little hooks on the end
like the spike helmet covers
and they hook onto the rim of the helmet.
I have always had a thing for German Army WW II
helmets ever since the 7th grade
and is a long time ago.
I think they look neat on a regular steel helmet
