Is this worth restoring?

As a complete novice with pickelhaubes is this worth restoring?

The white polish residue bothers me as this is usually indicative of petroleum based polishes which can't be good for leather.

It does look a mess and would cleaning up the brass be a disaster like it is on antique firearms.

I was going to make an offer of about £400 really.

Thank you for all you advice in advance

I wouldn't buy it.It looks like Indian production.Officer style with Adler for NCO.Compare Adler.

This is one of those British copies from the 1970's. The stitching is a dead giveaway. They are aged to appear old but there are several ways of telling. The liner edge as it appears in profile is one of the easiest ways to identify these. The "bulge" in the spike is another. The lack of detail on the Wappen is yet a third.
I know a collector who collects nothing but these, but they usually cost him between $45 and $65, definitely not what is being asked for this!

Total fake made in India and available anytime on EBay! Frankly, we see many fakes trying to be sold out of the UK.

Nick,

Glad you checked this out!

It was because of your Saxon helmet (that I missed) that I found this site.
The level of detail and research got me hooked immediately.
I thought I knew a little about pickelhaubes, I now realise that I know that they were helmets made of leather, felt or metal with a different spikes, balls, eagles, horsehair and have removable spikes that can be replaced. I just learnt this from the book The Saxons in Flanders 1914-18 their pickelhaubes have different attachments for the parade ground or combat.
There is so much to learn and its always great to learn new things.

There is now 1 pickelhaube and just like Iron Crosses there will doubtless be more

Thank you

Nick

Nick,

You’re very welcome. Glad you’ve benefited already. Through being a member of this forum, I have learnt a lot, received great advice, avoided making some expensive mistakes, and been able to buy some great haubes. Apart from all this, it is a great community of courteous, intelligent and positive people.
