Kurassier Metalhelme M1915

Gents, another dilemma for a perfectionist like myself:
I'm also being offered an unpolished LACHMANN EM Kurassier dated 1915 (maker is already a major plus) with a very good liner, a very few dings, and not much rust. It also comes with LARGE cockades.

Here are its drawbacks:
> Wrong spike (a regular M15 Inf. Haube spike!!)[this is the major issue]
> Paint on the (large) cockades is worn in many places thus showing the brass underneath; the white rings have been repainted
> 1 loose soldered point underneath one of the 2 rivets holding the top of the lobster tail (where it connects to the back of the helmet shell) [doesn't show much and seems farily easy to fix?]
> and finally a fake liner tie-string [not a big deal but I'm listing all the cons]

Would you buy that Kurassier hoping to find the proper spike one day and repaint the (large) cockades meanwhile?

Here are pictures I just received:

I agree about the brass Kockarden, they should be steel, and I am not really happy with the liner, but I have not owned a Lachmann.

You will not find one. Don't think you might, you will not. Can you live with that?

Nope and having a complete and nice Kurassier once and for all is more important to me than maker's name so I guess I'll pass on this one too... That combination Lachmann + large cockades was tempting though!

One more thing, and as mentioned in my JZP thread, I'm thinking of swaping chinstraps with this one which looks in a much better shape (same seller).
It does look an original M15 gray/steel as well, doesn't it?

Not having the correct spike on a helmet would drive me crazy!

Weitze recently added this to the website, you might be interested if the price is right.....

It looks nice but seems too expensive even for a Lachmann because of the high exchange rate to the USD. These items are overpriced in Europe, especially Germany, because of the Euro rate. It would be like buying an antique Damascus sword from the actual city of Damascus... They're always overpriced there.

Going back to the main issue: Can you guys confirm that the above CHINSTRAP is OK? (if I swap it with the one on the JZP since it's in a much better shape)

Hi Rony,
you can add in the "con list", that it has an infantery type front plate, not the cuirassier type one, but it could be a period "anomaly",
The helmet on Weitze website has the same problem.... + the chinstraps fittings are painted black as some post war chin straps for police tshakos.... I'm not sure but they need further examination,
cheers
Steve

Salut Stephane,
I've heard 2 conflicting versions about the larger Cavalry-type eagle but most collectors I know agree that the regular infantry type was the most commonly period used.
As for the Weitze specimen, I did notice the blackened fittings but I didn't bother enquire about these as I never purchase anything from them because their prices are inflated sometimes twofold, and that's before the conversion rate issue...
