Land Gendarmerie NCO Pickelhaube

Hello everyone,
here I am, I would like to share with the community my latest addition to the collection.
Not strictly in the military field, but I really like it for its conditions and its peculiarities.
We are talking about a Pickelhaube model 1895 of the Mounted Police for a NCO
Marked on the rear flap LG (LandGendarmerie) 08 and the size number.
However, I have not been able to find the meaning of the 08...can you help me?
Besides the ventilated “Hintersheine”I was also very struck by the peculiarity of the "ventilated" spike with the internal closing system.
Confronting me and asking for informations to an esteemed member of this community, he pointed out to me that the cockades are of a very unusual type, and if he wants, he can intervene with explanations
As always, every opinions are welcome to gain further knowledge about these beautiful helms.....
Here weare with pics and all my best from Turin
Giorgio

Excellent condition....a very nice addition to your collection. 👍 My first thought about "08" is 1908 ?? That is also an interesting spike ventilation system on the helmet. I have never seen that on an LG before....the one I owned certainly did not have that. Last, looking at your excellent kokarde photos....I have never seen the silver NCO ring riveted on like that. Thank you for the post.

Hello Giorgio,👌👋
A superb helmet. Congratulations. I don't have the same advanced shutter on my LG, but I have the same on my ‘Ostasiatisches Brigade’. Concerning the 08, yes, 1908.This is deduced from ten or so LG or RG markings followed by the year the helmet was put into service, either in 2 or 4 digits (see photos). The 2 digits range from 71 to 18. In other words, 1871 to 1918. There may be earlier dates, but I've never seen any.
Concerning the roundels, they are superb, and as said above, the original shape of the white circle, in a square U-shape instead of being half-round. And soldering with tin, like on the LwK of eagle, or the buttons of buckle, instead of the small folding legs. Thank you Giorgio for allowing me to add these 2 roundels to my posts on the cockades in the French forums.
Gorgeous!!!
Occasionally I'll do a post on Gendarmerie helmets: Land-Reichs and Provincial Gendarmeries.
Congratulations !

As the Gendarmerie is a military unit, the helmet
has undergone the same evolution as other Army helmets. This is why, for the Gendarmerie, we have
---Eigentum helmets for gendarmerie officers and non-commissioned officers.
---Kammer’ helmets belonging to the Army, which are marked in accordance with regulations.
In 1894, the ‘Kammer’ Gendarmerie helmets adopted the side post and M91 chinstrap.
Two types of Kammer helmet for the Gendarmerie:
---The Landgendarm helmet on foot is identical to the Garde-Grenadier helmet, except for the chinstrap, which is generally with domed scales, since no rifle, but a revolver and a sabre.
---The Landgendarm helmet on horseback, which is the Dragon Guard helmet.
The only difference is the marking LG instead of GGR or GDR. LandGedarm & GardeGrenadier.JPG
Here we still have the M71 models, with M71 chinstrap and M67 Perlring tips (in use until 1895, or even later).

Dear ClovisPuis-je savoir ce que signifie RG ? Je connais LG mais je ne sais pas ce qu'est RG.Merci
With pleasure:

Reichsgendarmerie, i.e. the gendarmes of the Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen, or in China, or possibly in Kameroun.
Same helmets as LG but with the Reichsadler.

Congratulations on an excellent LG helmet giorgio. I am glad to know that the numbers stamped next to the "LG" designation inside the helmet indicates the year of issue. I previously thought they might have indicated a specific Gendarmerie unit or area. Thank you for asking your questions. I love seeing other collectors acquisitions and learning something new.

Hello,
Indeed, this is what was supposed on French forums. I had been asked which “Gendarmerie Brigade” corresponded to RG18, (Strasbourg,? Metz,?)
And it's by studying this question, that I deduced that it was the year of delivery, in view of the ten or so markings I have in my archives.

First of all really thanks to everyone for your opinions...and I really love post like this one...you always learn something..:))
As the Gendarmerie is a military unit,
Just a question....I didn't consider Land Gendarmerie as military unit , am I wrong?

Juste une question... Je ne considérais pas la gendarmerie terrestre comme une unité militaire, ai-je tort ?
Yes, and no... 😊

I'll expand on all this when I do a post on Gendarmerie hairstyles (LandG, Saxe, Würt, Bayern, Reichsgendarmerie, Feldgendarmerie, etc...).

In the meantime, here's a link to give you an idea:

So the answer is a bit complicated. As in France today, where the gendarmerie still has military status (pension scheme, housing provided, possible intervention outside national territory, etc.) => Ministry of War, then Ministry of Defense.

BUT: -dependent for employment on the Minister of the Interior, in his regalian mission of policing public order (Prefect) and the judiciary (Public Prosecutor). => Ministry of the Interior.

It was much the same for the Prussian Landgendarmerie during WW1. Military status is demonstrated by the “detachment” of Landgendarme to the front;
The military status is demonstrated by the “detachment” of Landgendarme at the front, and is evidenced by the “troop” helmet supplied by the local B.A. with the markings of the “gendarmerie” department of the Prussian Army, i.e. L.G. (which is never the case with Extra-Helm Eigentum gendarmerie helmets or police helmets).
Here's a “Kammer”, supplied by the Army to equip a Reichsgendarm in Alsace-Lorraine. Conforming to the M91 or M95 infantry, and with Army markings.Reichsgendarm type Kammer95.jpgReichsgendarme Kammer M95.jpgRG18 Reichsgendarm.png
