Meldereiter

And note also that this one has the double stepped visor as opposed to the one that started this thread...

This June 1898 portrait of Georg Frhr. Thumb v. Neuburg appered in the May/June 1963 edition of the Zeitschrift für Heeres- und Uniformkunde.

I've just looked at pics of the first helmet pictured on a larger, high res monitor and now I see that it DOES appear to have the correct double-stepped visor, which I couldn't see initially...

Then there is this 1900 print by Knötel that also shows black helmets. As you can see from the establishment directive there were only 3 detachments originally in 1895. 4 are listed in the 1897 uniform regulatiion. This grew to 5 detachments by 1899 when the name changed to squadrons. Bavaria and Saxony also possessed Jäger zu Pferde squadrons until 1905, at which time they were assimilated into the 7th Chevauleger and 21st Uhlan regiments.

I missed a picture of a Bavarian but here is a real rarity –

Joe,

a rarity indeed. He is wearing the pattern introduced per order of 20 September 1900 for the Stabsordannanzen of the XIII. Armeekorps. I have attached a Paul Pietsch schematic illustration of that uniform. Prior to that, they had worn a dark green Waffenrock as shown in the second schematic with the addition of the number 13 in the epaulette field. I don't recall seeing any photographs of the earlier uniform in use.
