Thoughts? Value?

I am thinking of buying it depending on the price.

Looks like the spike disk is on the outside.

Thanks.

Peter

Hi Peter

I couldn't read the army Corp next to the 1914 year mark. Noted that the baden cockade is a reproduction, I have to think that it is later added. One have to note that baden army corps is B A Xiv if I didn't remember wrongly. As baden and prussian wappens can be placed on the helmet interchangeablely, we may have to take note.

Had a second look, supporting disc was placed inside but was recently removed. I would not pay more than $1k for it. A bargain price will be$500

The stamp may read B.A.14, which is correct for Baden. It is most uncommon to see a BA number in hindu-arabic - instead of roman - numbers though. Curved chinscales would make it, if original, a Train helmet. The rear visor is detached and there is some white stuff on the left side.

Thanks for the observations. Saw this helmet which may have the same sort of stamps and also seems to have a disk on top under the spike like the one I posted:

I wonder if that white stuff is glue given you think the rear visor is detached? Looks like the visor is sitting up a bit high and maybe off centre in the back as well?

I still do not know what the seller is asking for it and will be asking for some more pictures.

The Korps numbers for Baden are indeed BAXIV. The only Korps numbers I have ever seen in Arabic are Hessen...BA XVIII which is pretty lengthy when trying to stamp on a rear visor. Consequently, my JR 115 is marked BA 18. I believe the white deposits to be mould rather than glue. Neither wood glue or contact cement turns this colour of white after drying. My vote goes for a Baden wappen and repro. Kokarde being put on a Prussian helmet. Last, in my experience most train helmets with brass fittings are clearly marked TB as Bruno’s is.

Good point about RBA18, Brian. On the other hand, the truncated A. 14 marking we see on the neckguard may be Tr.A. 14 (Train Abteilung 14), as seen on the link sent by Peter. Additional pictures should solve the mystery...

There we go, great call Bruno! So the wappen is legit and all you need to find Pete, is an original Baden kokarde. Excellent markings and liner.

TB14 or TB XIV were the kind of stamps before mobilization of August 1914, as the Train units were still formed in Bataillonen.
Here we have a helmet produced after August 1914 (early war production between August and December 1914), as the markings are Train Abteilung 14, the date of regimentation is 1914 as the date of the maker mark.
In peace time, the TB´s were numbered with 20 officers and 430 EM. After 1914, a Train Abteilung was numbered with more than 100 officers and 2500 EM, because increased with reservists and cavalry Landwehrmänner. (Larcade, Tome II, page 173).

In the end I did not buy it as I have been spending too much lately. The seller also said he really didn't want to sell it in the end. But this was a great learning experience.

Thanks for all the input.

Well sometimes the stars align - sometimes they do not. Wife gave the okay this morning to get it but the guy stayed with his decision not to sell - guess I can't blame him.

Still looking for a Baden....
