Hello Gentlemen Collectors,
today I need your precious and kind opinion about this Oldenburg JR91 frontplate for an Offizier Pickelhaube.
Is it looking good for you, or maybe fake???
Thank you guys for some feedback!

Philippe,

It has many things that look good but I do not like it because of the flashing that can easily be seen on the crown. Of course it is always tough to tell from pictures but this is not for me. 8-[

I would not buy it. My main concern is the gold wash/paint on the screw post solder. We never see that in originals. I would also check the threading on the posts...is it coarse like it should be? My opinion. B

What is "flashing"?

I really don't think you wanted that question to mean what it says! :D :D :D :D

In the casting world is when there is extra metal leftover. I believe I see that in excess around the cross. :army:

ok, I set myself up for that one. I see what you mean with the crown cross now, looks chunky but maybe the photo.

Hello Gentlemen,
I have bought the helmet with this frontplate. I think I will get it till the end of the week.
However I will post more and better picts on the forum as I will have it.
I have the possibility to get my money back within two weeks when I´m not satisfied.
The hamburger dealer, Herr Ritscher, told me where this helmet come from (as far as I can believe him, but this person seems to be quite honest, as I asked him, he will also send an originality attest of this Haube together with it).
This OJR 91 officer helmet come from Herr Peter Meerbach collection. Herr Meerbach was chief restorator and curator of the Militaria-Abteilung of the Schloß Friedenstein in Gotha / Thuringia. Here is the guy:

http://www.guns-n-more.de/36101/61691.html?*session*id*key*=*session*id*val*" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He died in january 2011, and now the pieces of his Pickelhauben collection are going sold.
Herr Meerbach was from what I would call the "old school", was an helmet-expert, ...but he always wanted his pieces and the pieces at the Museum all to be shiny as they were worn in the past and polished them... :| (like the helmets in Fort de la Pompelle and Dresdner Museum). That´s maybe explain the gold wash around the threading posts.
OK, it was his attitude. I also prefer pieces with a lot of original patina, but however I think this helmet is original and that this frontplate has always been on this helmet. Look at the following picts of the dealer, especially the one with the ghost. On this pict, you can clearly see the absolut same outlining of the Adler and especially of this specific very hooked beak.
I also think the flashing comes from the bad quality of the picts. You can also clearly see the specific traces of the Oldenburg wappen fixing on the leather.
Here are more picts of the dealer, for the moment, till I make myself new ones.
Philippe

Philippe, I think you've purchased an outstanding, authentic IR 91 helmet. In fact, this exact same helmet is pictured on page 99 of Herrmann's Militärische Kopfbedeckungen der Kaiserzeit. The two diagonal scratch marks on the front peak trim, slightly sprung three scallop scale on right chinscale-half, and missing star are pretty conclusive. A published helmet with provenance…

Congratulations! =D>

I like it too. Looks solid to me and I am sure you will find a fit for that missing star.

I tried contacting Patina Ritscher a while ago, I was interested in a helmet but they never got back to me. Maybe they werent interested in shipping to the USA? :-k

Gents,
I´ve got this helmet today. Absolutely no doubt about its originality and that all the parts of it are matching. Really beautiful piece of history, much better in real than the dealer picts!!
Lost skeleton, thank you for this surprising information! I did not know that! Great! :D The first thing I did yesterday was to search this book from Reiner Herrmann on the internet and I was lucky because I found one that I bought immediately!
I will take better picts of this OJR 91 Offizier Pickelhaube and publish them soon in a new topic , together with the other Haube (b.I.R.15) that I have bought today from the same dealer with perfectly matching and also well marked Mannschafts-Überzug. It was a "Doppel-Schlag" ! Es lebe Bayern!
