Opinions on officer Spike?

It looks fine to me, I think poor lighting may account for your worries. Note, you can see the marks left by the officer stars on the base which is typical for a 100 year old original.

I have the impression that the object was painted with gold paste for renovation of picture frames. I use this paste for renovation of wood. Several objects that I imported from France were made with this method. It is difficult to remove the paste from the object, but it is possible to do so. Under the layer of painted dirt nice gilding comes out.

I agree it could be poor lighting and bad photography but all of my officer spikes have a semi-circular or rectangular cut out in the base where the end of the rear spine fits this one doesn’t appear to have one. As I don’t have that many examples not sure if that’s a problem or not.

The joint of the neck to the base plate seems to be gold, too...not the typical dull gray solder. Has it been covered with gilding paste?
