First off an early Baden helmet...

Early Oldenburg...

Curious spike eh? I'm guessing all the helmets are 1842 models with state variations and were worn up to the 1860s? I'm sure you lot can correct me here...

I have been to the Wehrgeschichtlichesmuseum at Rastatt about 40 times. I went every month from 1981 to 1984 and have been back every time I visit Deutschland. I have stood with my face pressed against the glass 6 inches from items I can only dream of. The quality of everything is unbelievable. I knew the retired Museumsleter Herrn Colonel Schmidt and had the pleasure of a visit from him in Calgary in 1993. On my last visit to Schloss Rastatt in 2004, I said to the ticket lady (in German) when she asked why I was visiting that I had a little web site called "Kaiser's Bunker" and a man rolled out of his office in a chair and said (in German) "I know this site!". It was Herrn Böhm the Museumsleterhe and he gave me a two hour tour. I was interested in seeing an issued Waffenrock from the Franco-Preußen war, but sadly, of the 2000+ Waffenrock in Rastatt, none to show. So after two hours, I finally got stuck on a word, and he said to me in perfect English; "the word you want is......" I was floored. Here I had been struggling for two hours auf deutsch and he spoke perfect English. He said: "I did 3 years at Ft Knox USA as an exchange Colonel, but you were doing fine, so why speak English?"

Excellent photos Chris, thanks for sharing. Only time I was able to visit the museum was with Marshall Daut in the mid 1980's, it was closed!!!! The building was very cool regardless and I remember very clearly the wonderful FP era Denkmal in the town square.

Good story too Tony, by chance would you remember the oldest dated waffenrock they had in the collection? Just curious...

Glad you're all enjoying the photos. Great story Tony, I'd like to visit it forty times too. It's really so good isn't it? I was amazed nobody else was there, I was there about four hours and maybe saw two or three other visitors. Maybe this thread will encourage a few more visitors.

My story wasn't so impressive. My German is vaguely conversational but I fell at the first hurdle when they asked if I'd like a "guided tour" of the Baroque Palace... I'm OK while we're just talking abour Bier or the Schutztruppe, fine until they pull something unexpected out of their vocabulary bag!

Larmo, that's so unlucky visiting when it was closed! I had just one day free in Germany on a work trip, I originally planned to see the Ingolstadt Bavarian Army Museum but luckily I chanced across a tourist guide website that mentioned it's currently closed for refurbishment. Their main website didn't mention it. I'd have been none too happy if I'd journeyed across Germany through the snow to visit a closed museum...

Larmo, you asked about tunics... the oldest properly idenified and dated one I saw was an 1789 Bavarian Chevauleger tunic...

But some are important enough to get a display case of their own. I think we all know who's this is (notice the distinctly shorter left sleeve)....

I don't think there can be enough superlatives for this museum...

Oh, and Larmo, I missed the FP memorial but did see a First World War memorial to the 2nd Baden Artillery just around the corner...

And Mackensen's 1. Leib-Hussar uniform....

...and Princess Viktoria of Prussia's unique 2. Leib-Hussar uniform...

Has everyone seen enough now, or shall I keep posting more?

...and here's some other wartime variations....

A Baden felt Pickelhaube

A Prussian Tschapka with the top removed...

A Wuerttemberg felt Tschapka

...what's going on here? I didn't think Baden had heavy cavalry? Am I missing something obvious?

helmbadenheavycavwartimeblackenedsteel1.jpg

...and finally possibly the ugliest piece of Imperial German Headgear I've ever seen, an Ersatz busby...

Off to get some sleep, might post some more tomorrow if I get a chance.

Golly..

This could be a Stabsordonnanz helmet I think?

I would love to see more of that helmet labeled "135". The screw heads look huge. I hope that is not a chocolate brown leather rim...
