Interesting to see a fireman’s conversion made from an officer helmet. Can you share your method of filling extra holes?

Ron
For many years I have been collecting old leather from the period, which I use for repairs. It doesn't matter whether it's leather from a belt or a pickelhaube. The most important thing is the thickness of the skin.I find the right thickness, color and make a patch.I glue the patch in place with shoe glue. Then I make a sprinkling of ground leather in the appropriate color. For this repair, I used gloves from a clay pot buried in the ground in March 1945. The pot was dug up in April 2018.

It's almost done. The Pickelhaube will be gently soaked in water and shaped on the mannequin's head. Now it has been coated with black shoe polish and is drying.

Hello! Please tell me what size visors are needed for a size 57 helmet? Are the front and rear sizes different?

There is no clear answer. Some pickelhaubes have the same length front and rear visors. In some cases, the difference is as much as 1.5 centimeters. It all depends on the conditions in which the leather was stored.Do not be misled by the width, as you must add the brass fittings.Place the front and rear visors on the helmet and see if they fit together visually. For size 57, the best length will be between 23 and 24 cm.
Wojtek.

I'm making a pickelhaube for myself for reconstruction. I have a leather replica of the sphere itself, my friend made it for me. Then I'll assemble it myself. Then varnish it... The fittings will be partly original, partly replica. Now it looks like this, I tried on the visors and punched holes for the firmware.

I missed this last fall. As usual, fascinating detailed analysis and example how to rehabilitate these old soldiers. Thank you for sharing your insights.
Best regards
John
