G´day gentleman,
I just found this place while searching the net for info on an item I have.
I already know it is from a Prussian machinegun unit and I get the feeling it is somewhat rare.I was asking a dealer for info on it and was offered a lot of money for it-but no real info. Is there a way I can up pics here?

Kindest Regards

From your photos it appears that the front plate is incorrect for this shako. The plate is too large. It looks as though a front plate from a spike helmet has been placed on the shako. The front plate for a shako, while of the same style, is considerably smaller. Additionally, the shako should not have a Prussian kokarde on the left side. There should only be a national (red, silver, black) kokarde on the right side. The chinscales may also have been replaced as they appear too long for the size of the shako.

Is there a ventilator(s) on each side of the shako body just below the leather top?

Regarding the numbers of Maschinengewehr-Abteilungen. By the 1st of October 1904 there were 16 in total:

2 Prussian Guard Detachments
11 Prussian Line Detachments: 1 - 11
2 Saxon Detachments: 12 & 19
1 Bavarian Detachment

The reorganisations of 1911, 1912 and 1913 which saw the further provision of machine gun companies for the infantry regiments caused five of the MG-Detachments to be reorganised as infantry MG companies as follows:

MG-Abteilung Nr. 12 - Schützen-(Füsilier-) Regiment Nr. 108 on 1.10.11
MG-Abteilung Nr. 6 - I.R. 151 on 1.10.12
MG-Abteilung Nr. 9 - I.R. 172 on 1.10.12
MG-Abteilung Nr. 1 - G.R. 4 on 1.10.13
MG-Abteilung Nr. 3 - I.R. 136 on 1.10.13

Consequently the Detachments 8, 10 & 11 were renumbered 1, 3 & 6 respectively on 1 Oct 1913. Saxon MG-Abteilung 19 was also renumbered to 8 on 1 Oct 1913.

15 Festungs-Maschinengewehrabteilungen were formed in 1913. They however wore the uniform of the infantry regiment to which they were attached with the insignia of the 14th Company.

Glenn

Hello Gentlemen,
I shall tell you AR is being grateful for your replies( Sven....slip of tongue, heh :P ) esp. for Glennj`s. The Prussian kokade is sth. AR could say nothing about.
Last thing I was sent, because AR was unregistered-was that for the link destination? If so,that is funny.Anyway, have fun lads and carry on....
:)

Hello again,
glad I was deleted by accident! I was looking through some of your threads and I like the general atmosphere here. Although you won´t get me out of the devil´s clutches you made me change my mind in regard to the tschako!
In the beginning I intended selling it and after I was offered $$$$ by a dealer I got suspicious and wanted to know more about it. Now I won´t sell it no more as I think it is one of the best looking tschakos you could go for! Let me know if there are more beautiful ones in regard to general appearance.

Best

I hate to interrupt the comedy, but to get back on subject, did you read the posting by reservist1 (06 June)? There are some concerns.

Have a look at my officer example here, and you will see some differences. Look at the size of the eagle Wappen, the side air vents, the way the chinscales are on etc.>> http://www.kaisersbunker.com/dunkelblau/helmets/dbh51.htm

As far as "more beautiful ones" that depends on the viewer. I am rather partial to Sachsen (Saxon) Tschako myself.

So to sum up if I may. The vent holes appear to be correct from what I can see having looked at Tonys' example. The chin scales may be add ons as they appear to be too long for the helmet. The Prussian officer kokarde has to be taken off and the wappen is too large and therefore from an infantry officer pickelhaube.
The main thing is that the shell and fedlzeichen appear to be correct. The chin scales are no problem...maybe the guy had a long face with a big chin?? Buy another set of scales if you want to. Take off the Prussian kokarde and look for a proper officer style shako wappen. The most expensive and hard to find item will be the wappen but not an impossible piece to buy.
If you check the back of the infantry wappen that is on right now you will probably see that one of the screw posts has been moved to make it fit.
Once these problems have been solved AR you have a very rare Prussian MG officer shako. Brian

I am not trying to cause any undo questions but the felt is more of the steingrau is this a normal color as opposed to the felfgrau or Black? Just curious and trying to learn.
Mark :salute:

In response to your original question about the colour of the shako cloth. From the pictures that I have seen in references this colour seems to be typical...more of a green , less grey thread perhaps added to the mix?? Brian

There was a similar (not the same) offered by Chas at
SOS06 as a repro. It really had everyone stymied. The Gd. star looked good. Weitze said 1934 police and put it down. Maybe Sven knows something. R1 as usual has salient points.

I'm going to clear off some of the humore, so send your hate mail to me. I love the humore but this thread is getting tough to follow.

Hi,

Thanks for your expertises on what is wrong with or added to the tschako. In regard to the wappen, can anyone give me the dimensions it should have?

I give them here.>> http://www.kaisersbunker.com/pt/tschako.htm

Which was also provided by other guys trying to help you on other forums that you have posted this same Tschako on.

Hello AR:

Regarding the chinscales, the leather backing and chinstraps should be the same color as the all other leather on a MGA Tschako.

However, if they are black leather, I would regard them as replacements.

Chas.
