Rarest of All Pickelhaubes

Here is the Hawaiian Pickelhaube of which I was speaking, although the one above is of great interest to me as well. Was the Madagascar spiked helmet in the German style, or of German manufacture? These are really the only ones that interest me. How about this rare Chinese cuirassier helmet, of which none are known to have survived...

No, the Madagascar helmet would not have been of German style. Probably French, but maybe British manufacture. It was more of a sun helmet with a spike. Madagascar was in France's sphere of influence and then was invaded and became a colony at the end of the 19th century.

Here is something I wrote on these helmets:

Peter- lovely cork helmet, and very interesting article! Do you have one of the Ludwig Bordfeldt-made Chilean pith helmets in your collection?

The Madagascar helmet is unfortunately not mine however. It is the only known one to exist and is in the Musee d'Armee in Paris. I do not have that style Chilean helmet either. Those are very rare and I've never seen one for sale. I have an Argentine and a Uruguayan sun helmet from the late 19th/early 20th century.

Thanks Peter- very interesting information. I have one of the unique helmet plates for the Chilean pith helmet, but sadly not the helmet itself...
