Raupenhelm

so I had to get this, likely paid too much but ive always wanted one. Looking for the brass side ribs. my thought is this was a 1868 chevalier turned into a Bavarian home guard at one time in its life. Looking for a couple scales or complete chin strap as well. any thoughts on this as well. I paid $500 so how much did i mess up?

$500 you did well, parts alone worth more then that.

So Home guard wappen which usually has a spike top not the comb, but on these older helmets who knows? Are the extra holes behind the wappen where the L or M wappen would have been? Parts maybe hard to find, but keep looking on EBAY Germany, you never know.

James

yes, you can tell it was changed. there were a couple holes there along with the side holes. you can tell what it was before it was changed, the chin strap is what confuses me. do you think its off an 1845?

Congratulations! Helmet is perfect for a (possible) restauration project. Seems to be shell of an M45/48 Raupenhelm (artillery of Chevaulegers)
Chinscales must be modified (hanging on lionhead-posts). Origianl L (one part before 1848) or M (after) emblems can be found on german or
french ebay. The "Hiebspangen" and "Huppenstiefel" (to hold the "pompom" have to be reproduced. Are the chinscales brass or nickel-plated?

the above helmet is from my collection and just shows, how it can look like after restauration
I forgot to introduce myself - having collected over many years the whole range of imperial headgear, uniforms, acesories, swords, I sold most
of it (except helmets and swords) before retirement and movefrom Nuernberg to canary islands. Money was mainly reinvested into rare officer helmets, also due to a space problem. I found the forum some months ago and apreciate to read every day all the upcoming newsl Thomas

Thanks Thomas!!!! Your input is amazing. I visited Nuremberg many times as a Soldier I lived in Mannheim for 6 years. Thanks for your input. I will post more photos when I receive the helmet from Germany :)

Sorry Erich, I missed the post owner
Also a very warm welcome for you in our forum and good luck for your restoration (y)

Well it’s here. Looks like some real and some fake or later parts. It’s marked 1855 and a name or unit.I can’t pinpoint the cockade though. Just Cool stuff. Not to start looking for parts lol Thoughts?
