Excellent remark, Brian. This is how R for "reserve" was distinguished from R for "regiment". Very common on Saxon helmets (and, as far, as I know, not seen in any other state; there may be exceptions though, as always...).Another cursive "R" on the markings of Bruno's helmet. I have never seen this before. There is always something new in this hobby! Excellent helmets gentlemen.
So much exceptions in the Land of SaxonyThis is how R for "reserve" was distinguished from R for "regiment". Very common on Saxon helmets (and, as far, as I know, not seen in any other state; there may be exceptions though, as always...).
Very nice, Brian!I have owned this old beast for 40 years, dated 1898 179 R, no cursive. No slider vent and two in and out small shrapnel holes. This Regt was created in 1897.

1898 179. R Other markings on the opposite side...IIB 5K III which would translate to 2nd Battalion, 5th Kompanie, Condition 3 Also clear indents from the uberzug clips. So as usual, there are no "clear rules" in the pickelhaube world.
Brian, does your helmet plate have screws and nuts fixed in the shell without grommets? Thanks for identifying my helmet as a model 1891 Bruno
