Hello

I would like your opinion on this helmet.
I remember that a leather reinforcement on the edge of Ersatz spiked helmet could be potentially a red flag.

Hello,

This looks like a typical what is known as a "made in the United Kingdom" felt helmet with a leather edge all the way around the edge of the helmet.

Sometimes they have an area on them that looks like it got wet at some point of time.

We also sometimes see these with bogus ink stamps on the underside of the back visor.

Yes, produced years ago for the collector market. Does anyone on the forum know when these were produced and by whom? I have a Prussian one with nearly identical characteristics. Note the small thin brads used to retain the spike base, the unusual spike base itself, and the leather liner color and of course the leather rim trim. Mine has an original brass Prussian wappen and chinstrap posts that were painted a flat grey to match the other hardware. I purchased mine from Manion’s, a well known auction house, in the early 1990’s. I keep mine to represent what relatively good reproduction pickelhaubes can look like.

They must have been produced abundantly, because I see several examples of them every year.

I don't have one of this type, but I do have a couple of other repro helmets that I bought on purpose in order to show other collector friends what to beware of when they look at old collections to purchase, or they may run across a reproduction helmet at a gun show, auction, flea market, or antique shop.

I just handled one of these last Thursday, July 25th. It was in the collection of an old friend, and he knew it was a replica. He bought it from the old defunct Manion's Auction House in Kansas City, Kansas, many years ago. His example is also a Saxon helmet.

Yes, I believe the parts on that helmet I saw in my friend's collection are replica parts. I also asked my friend, and he told me the parts are replica parts.

Another tell-tale sign about these fake/replica felt helmets is that they are very light in weight, when compared to an original WW1 era German felt spike helmet with original parts.
