Saxon Leibgrenadier offizier Pickel?

Philippe,

Welcome to the forum! There is a ton of learning to come here and we welcome you wholeheartedly. One caution is that you have the same avatar as Paul LeBrasseur. I would change it. People might think you are Paul LeBrasseur. His brother is a convict. Who knows what Paul will do. I don't think you want people thinking you are Paul. Pick someone else's logo. Otto is a nice guy. Maybe use his.

Now for the real stuff -- my opinion -- is no way José. This is a parts helmet. The only trouble is, I don't know exactly what is being sold.

The very first thing that caught my eye was the pearl ring. It should look like this:

.
See how thin and oval shaped the example is? This appears to be a reproduction base. As a result, the threads would be different. So therefore, the spike is probably not correct. The male screw on the spike seems okay. You cannot tell what kind of thread from the pictures, but I do not see two rings around the spike.

.

Which cockade is for sale? There are pictures of two different Saxon cockades on the wrong side of the helmet. One appears to be 48 mm and the other one is much bigger. The green is two different colors in the two different pictures. There is some sort of weird 48 mm Prussian cockade there also.

The Star studs are supposed to be silver not gold for the advertised piece. Notice how the Star studs extend over the spike base. Two big or too small of a base.

There are many more problems with this helmet. This is just a subset. I hope my opinion helped. I would not have bid on this.

Welcome again, be careful of Gus too. He has no hands, and we're not sure what he is up to.

The cockades look a real mess to me. I know Saxon spikes were higher than other states spikes sometimes but this one seems ridiculous, and there's no "platform' for the thread. Pity the poor bugger that shelled out for this heap. surely a genuine one would fetch more than this?

Hi Phillipe. Are you a freind of "Pickle..... sorry, "TschapkaMax"?

Actually, I believe it is my 5. Garde Regt. z. Fuß, and Philippe is more than welcome to use it. Given all the spectacular helmets that appear on this forum, I'm flattered Philippe selected mine for his avatar.

The pictures of the helmet in question seem either to squeeze or stretch the image. Consequently, the pearlring displays more acceptable proportions (albeit elongated) in the side views. The seller may have employed an extreme wide angle or "fisheye" lens to photograph the helmet.

Joe alluded to other problems and one of the most glaring is the liner. The silk has been machine stitched to the sweatband. Originals were hand tacked, but not entirely around the circumference like this example.

In a word, I hate it.

Welcome to the forum Philippe. We are glad to have you here. This is an overall view of the helmet if you would like to use it.

Hello Philippe,
I would not worry about Paul, He has some problems with coversion of meters to feet, if he traveled to your country, he would be arrested for exceeding the speed limit, on an erlier post, Paul wrote that he could not believe that people were allowed to drive 110 miles per hour on Canadian highways. Canada is a strange place, in the old days before they converted to the metric system, I can remember that my auto would get 25% better milage on Canadian gas, but my tank would not hold as many gallons.
Best wihses

Hello Phillipe,

Welcome aboard. You will get some excellent advice here, it is a great place to learn.

Gus, it sounds like the Canadian contingent is going to have to give you another thrashing.

Cheers,

Laurie

Hi all ,and thank you for your kindness.
im living in North East France near Nancy ,if someone knows :)
There was fierce battles in the very beginning of the war (8/1914)
this was called "La bataille du Grand Couronné" (around the hills of Nancy, and "la trouée de charmes" who opposed a bavarian army crops against the french 20 th corps (my grand-grand father was part of it , in the 69 th infantry rgt)
The first pickel i had, was indeed the one my grand-grand father take at Rozelieures the 26th August 1914, (a bavarian one m1895,very common, but special for me) .
Just for info bavarians suffered more than 2600 losses in and around Rozelieures..
I have this pickelhaube from my grandfather, (his son) and im always asking me,what he would have thought that some years later i would begin a collection of this kind of things .
Excuse me for my bad english, im trying to make me understandable ,and school is already far ,for me
to epsomgreeen : yes i like your haube from Guard Rgt ,i hope to get the same, one day :P

Salut Philippe,

Gus

I have been several times to Nancy where I know interesting spike helmet collections, not to mention the auction house that once in a while advertises spike helmets...

Ahhh Gus....the Imperial gallon was larger than the US gallon. Consequently, your car took less fuel. Our gas is of a higher octane so you could go faster. Our beer has a higher alcohol content you can achieve inebriation quicker. In regard to Canadian roads...they are wider and better maintained so consequently, we are able to travel safely at a higher speed. We also have more water and treat our farmers better. You and Maggie must come up for a visit. From these comments you must also realise that Canucks have a great affinity to Texans!
Lastly, welcome Phillipe. I would really like to see your grandfathers' Bavarian helme. Your English is excellent..or if you wish ecrivez en francais. Regards, Brian

Gus, it sounds like the Canadian contingent is going to have to give you another thrashing.

Hey Laurie, It is not my fault Canadians can not measure gas right.

Ahhh Gus....the Imperial gallon was larger than the US gallon.
Ahh yes Brian, but I could never figure out how the imperial gallon could be 5 quarts, there should only be 4 quarts to a gallon. As I recall, gas in Canada was more expensive per gallon, but it was not like you had to pay with real money anyway. I do not know when I will be allowed into Canada again, the hand grenade incident is probably not forgotten yet.
Gus

Gustaf, Old Chap,

If your emanations are any indication, there is a surplus of gas South of the 49th, that is why your gas is so cheap.

Or, as they say in the 55th Mounted Foot Reg't.: "Get stuffed, rude letter to follow!"

Take that, you fiend!

Cheers,

Laurie

Hey Laurie,
I would say that you are right, the area in the US that is thelargest producer of gas is Washinton DC, if we could figure out how to harness the Gas and Hot air eminating from there, energy costs would be so low the oil producing nations would have to pay us to take thir oil. Isn't this thread getting off topic, where is the moderator, is he sleeping on the job again? Let's get back to important subjects, like, what is the best beer available in the Great White North?
