Sold

well, it is too good a story not to relate it.
Going way back in time before the first Max Show in St. Louis
I will try and streamline the story
real people that I knew .A story that i would not believe if I had not seen it happen.
A collector in Calif. had a large collection ringkragen ; I will call him Mr. S.
A mixture of different countries
mostly German both Imperial & 3rd Reich
he wanted to sell but all or none
I wanted the Imperial ones ; no dice!
some time later I get a phone call from Mr. X who I do not know
He tells me that Mr. S. has turned over the collection to be sold for him
Mr. X asks me if I want the Imperial part
I say yes
He tells me to show good faith because I don't know him
that he will send me the ringkragen that I want
after I get them and am O K with them
then I pay him
he sent them and I paid him all is good
later Mr. X calls me and says that he needs help to sell
the 3rd Reich part of the collection
I told him maybe 1 friend here in town
my friend shows interest
Mr. X tells me there are too many to mail
IF he arrives in town will I pick him up and drive him to my friend
and I do
My friend owned a string of video stores at the time
we got into a back room of the store
Mr. X has a suitcase full of the ringkragen
he lays them all out on a table
the real deal
I say that I will leave the room so that they can deal
Mr. X says ; No stay , no secrets
they reach a price
my friend says BUT I don't have all the money right now
Mr. X asks my friend
How much can you pay now ?
an amount is given and Mr. X says O K
and since you are a friend of Mr. McFarland I will leave all of them with you
and you can send me the payments
all is good
my friend males some payments as promised
then he gets a call from Mr. X
Mr X tells him that he has a " Red Hot " deal and needs cash
to close it , so if my friend can pay him less than what he owes
he will call it even
I tell my friend that it don't sound right but IF you do it
get it all in writing ; done deal
then Mr. S calls me and asks me when I and my friend will pay
Mr. X for the ringkragen
I tell Mr. S. that all payments have been made and I have copies of the bank check
then Mr. X calls me
he says Don't talk to Mr. S. anymore that he is upset and he will take care of it
Bottom line Mr. S. goes to the house of Mr. X
Mr. X is gone
Mr. S. goes to the police
he finds out that Mr. X had filed an insurance claim that his house was broken into and
the collection was stolen .Mr. X collected the insurance money
and skipped town
Mr. X collected twice for the collection and Mr. S. the owner got nothing
Years later I am in St. Louis at the Max show
I see a high roller walking the show room in the 3 piece suit and a shaved head
He looked like Daddy WarBucks
I said to myself I wonder who is this fellow ?
I get on the elevator, Daddy WarBucks is on there also
He turns around ansd says "Hello Mr. McFarland , don't you remember me ?
I am Mr. X
I get off at the next floor , which is not even my floor
I just want to get out of there
True story only the names had been changed

You are correct Steve, using the friends and family option, leaves the option of getting your money back out.
I do alway's use that option though, when buying helmets, reference books and such from collector friends I know and trust on this forum.
So they are not confronted with the PayPal fees.
Nowhere else though.
If I know the person well enough I will do F & F
BUT not to someone that I don't know

Brian, I was thinking the exact same thing, as I was posting in this thread yesterday. Maybe bustbang, whoever he or she was, was reading all reply's being posted here. Apparently that was right.
I also hope nothing like that happens again, but there is no way of being sure new members are scammers or not unfortunately..
I do hope Reiner will be able to get his money back.

Regards, Coert.

bustbang has been banned from the forum. Their last visit was April 11 4:19 pm so they obviously have been following this thread. This is the first time anything like this scam has been attempted on the forum. Hopefully, it will not happen again.
Thank You !
Steve

Sorry to hear this story.
I live in the UK and have had to deal with UK customs many times. The receiver of an item only ever pays any duty, to have something released from customs, to then be forwarded to recipient.
Never as upfront security charge, and they deal with the recipient direct. just incase anone else hears otherwise.

Unfortunately, the fraudster did not contact the forum again after the ban. The money is gone.
As we Bavarians like to say: Lightning should hit him when he's shitting

I did not know that Bavarian saying - but could not agree more! Sorry to hear it.
